I'm procrastinating on sending a cost estimate for couture work. The person requesting, bless them, lives in a fancy neighborhood, drives a luxury car, and somehow thought custom couture was going to be the same price as discount retail.

@MsHearthWitch @artbyailbhe Price negotiations are my very least favorite part of the process. With my photo biz a decade ago, I made the fatal mistake of giving in to the Chester Cheapskates. It's a mistake I have no plan to repeat.

elfkin,
@elfkin@woof.group avatar

@MsHearthWitch @artbyailbhe Same! It is my least favorite topic in life.

elfkin,
@elfkin@woof.group avatar

@MsHearthWitch @artbyailbhe Of all of the concepts humanity has conjured in its existence, money has been, by far, the most injurious.

elfkin,
@elfkin@woof.group avatar

@bowreality @MsHearthWitch @artbyailbhe This is brilliant advice!

Because I'm in Los Angeles, many folks want to negotiate like they were a goddam Hollywood agent. However, my Elfkin biz is a clean slate with which I'm not keen to repeat past mistakes.

I can offer a little discount if I'm making several of the exact same item as that scenario is faster for me. As that's the case here I did so. But otherwise I made it clear that the price is the price.

elfkin,
@elfkin@woof.group avatar

@bowreality @MsHearthWitch @artbyailbhe I do! Though being one who loathes the feeling of clothing tags on my skin and not wanting to torture clients who might feel the same, I usually place it in an inconspicuous place like the bottom front of a shirt's button placket.

The third iteration of Darla’s fitting bodice and pants are stitched up. Adapting the menswear drafting formulas for a woman’s body has been a journey, and hopefully I’ve finally worked out the kinks. #sewing #tailoring #ElfkinLaunch #couture

It’s Greek cheese pinwheel thing (store bought - Ina Garten said it was ok) and a salad of shaved fennel, carrots, and celery with a lemon and orange dressing for lunch today. #cooking

my spoons are few today, so am catching up with silly celebrity news and such; and i stumbled upon this bit about the "Golden Bachelor".

i have never been able to watch this show in any of its iterations. it's second hand embarrassment thru and true. the cringe is so bad i have felt physically uncomfortable even seeing the ads for the show.

so i have to ask: WHAT THE FUCK IS WRONG WITCHALL USA?!?!

how has this show been on the air for so long? what is it with Americans and voyeurism?!?!

elfkin,
@elfkin@woof.group avatar

@blogdiva So much agreement! I would rather watch paint dry on a cold, rainy day.

elfkin,
@elfkin@woof.group avatar

@violetmadder @blogdiva Exploitative is precisely the right word. And what I find most dissonant is that these shows are often promoted as somehow wholesome.

Today's note from a working artist.

I'm seeing more and more posts tagged with / that feature AI generated images.

Folks, that's not art. What those models spew is based on millions (billions?) of copyright violations.

It's insulting and infuriating to see a fancy new form of creative theft passed off as anything other.

Fans of , now is a good time to reconsider your glorification of these tools and how you post AI generated content.

It’s been a multi-day affair, interspersed with a lot of pattern drafting, but my fabric stash is finally organized. Fitting toiles are all folded and filed. And there’s a space in the closet for me to hang my patterns instead of hanging them all over the walls and on the backs of doors as I have been.

For someone who cooks as much as I do, I’ve been crap about sharing my recent kitchen adventures.

See also today’s lunch: pasta with escarole, bacon, Calabrian dried chili, fennel, and shallot.

elfkin,
@elfkin@woof.group avatar

@MsHearthWitch I got into the habit during lockdown and have just kept it up. Pasta + condimenti is very much in regular rotation for being a legit 30 minute meal.

#cooking thought: "oven finish" a #steak in a toaster/convection oven? Would that work or be too harsh of heat? Feels like it'd be more consistent.

Then again, I got a suis vide thing and just haven't learned to use it yet. Sounds like that is The Way and all I should worry about that + searing it right, no? Still searching for the perfect sear.

elfkin,
@elfkin@woof.group avatar

@SirTapTap FWIW I’ve finished many a steak and chop in toaster ovens both grand and modest. All have done a good job at the task while pouring far less heat into the kitchen than a big oven.

Boeing seem determined to replay the saga of the de Havilland Comet for a modern audience with the 737 MAX-9s. No amount of love or money would ever get me on one of those winged tributes to corporate narcissism.

Awake at the ass crack of dawn, but we are now parked at the surgical center. Can't go in until 9am.

I'm a combo of nervous and excited. Most of my logistics work is done, although this parking space is a max 2hr limit so I'll need to find another once DS is in surgery.

T-minus 2.5 hrs til surgery.

Rain has made the light terrible til now, but I spent all of yesterday afternoon sewing and made my son a Dopp kit for all of the testosterone shot stuff.

There's a lot of stuff and I wanted them to have a nice way to lug it around. I ordered some small sharps shuttles too so they can keep one in there.

It's been so nice getting back sewing again. There's a real zen to it.

Bag is real leather, with a bee print on the inside cuz son is NBeeeeeee hehe.

Would love to see your pets in their fav spots!

First up is Nameless. Yup, that's his name! He will be 10 this year, he was a bonus cat, I'd only intended to adopt one. And wound up with two!

My caftan beading adventure is at the half way point. Hooooo boy, what a slog! I’ll be trying the tambour beading technique next time I get a notion to do this. #sewing

A blue caftan with a fan and paisley motif that radiates outward from the neckline. Blue and silver beads have been used to pick up the design in the alternating rows of the design’s repeat.

I think I heard a crack from my enameled cast iron pan while cooking a steak, after cleaning it thoroughly I can't see a single crack, chip, or even a bump. Stove looks fine too.

Anything to worry about?

The oil ran out and got some stuff caked on, gotta use lower heat I guess so the oil doesn't all boil away

#cooking

elfkin,
@elfkin@woof.group avatar

@SirTapTap FWIW I have several enameled cast iron pans and will often heat those same pops and pings when the pan is being heated, especially to higher temps like for searing.

Foodie friends!

I've been wanting to make a Beef Wellington ever since I had one at The Rubens in London (seriously best meal I've ever eaten, and most expensive, lol)

All recipes call for prosciutto though and when I make it it'll be for someone who eats kosher-ish.

What else could I use? Seems weird to wrap a beef roast in pastrami. And I am struggling to think of something with that cured, salty buttery-ness that would work.

elfkin,

@MsHearthWitch Now I suddenly want to make a beef Wellington. I used to make them for holiday parties when I was younger.
