Just because #Putin is bad and his invasion of #Ukraine horrendous does not automatically make the powers that be in Ukraine good. There are some very sketchy elements in the government in Ukraine, for example #NordStream, https://www.spiegel.de/international/investigating-the-attack-on-nord-stream-all-the-clues-point-toward-kyiv-a-124838c7-992a-4d0e-9894-942d4a665778

eighthave,

@EyalL I'd say it is pretty clear that attacking civilian infrastructure many hundreds of kilometers away from the war is not legal. You might try asking Germany how they feel about it. And if you think this attack was legal, then Russia's attacks putting Ukrainians in the dark would also be legal. That's a terrible precedent to set.

And as a resident of this overheating planet, I'm disgusted by the largest release of methane ever https://www.newscientist.com/article/2342081-nord-stream-leak-may-have-been-largest-methane-emission-ever-recorded/

Europe has a long history of destroying river ecosystems throughout the continent by building dams. This contributes a lot to . The is exporting this, by paying for new dams in pristine ecosystems, for example, in the , where the locals have long history of keeping nature intact and wild. Places like and should export their knowledge to the EU, what is happening is vice versa and now we watch more "dams destroy rivers completely"

Its frustrating to see how deeply #Copyright cartels have infiltrated our culture, that people call making cost-free digital copies "theft" even in countries where it is fully legal to do so. It is not even "copyright infringement" if it is not against the local copyright laws. And yes, unlike laws about theft, copyright laws vary widely around the world. I've always liked "Copying Is Not Theft" has an illustration of the difference https://yewtu.be/watch?v=IeTybKL1pM4

After mostly living off grants I wrote or helped write for a decade, it still feels like a gamble whenever I submit a proposal. I guess the key is to submit many, and find an acceptable failure rate. It still sucks to put a bunch of work into something, then it is just rejected.📝 💥💨

While F-Droid appears to be "just" an alternative for , it is actually the apex of a lifestyle movement that's choosing to use Android only with and without or advertising-related . Realising that makes many of its features - and shortcomings - easier to understand. I was the main interviewer in the discussion this week on Weekly with core @fdroidorg developer @eighthave and it was a good show.

https://twit.tv/shows/floss-weekly/episodes/741?autostart=false

eighthave,

@danb @webmink @fdroidorg By "drops out", do you mean like if an app adds a proprietary lib? In that case, we've handled that many times. We also have handled many cases of changing Anti-Features on existing apps. We generally engage with upstream in these cases, and work through the issue. Many upstreams are thankful because we caught something they didn't know was happening. Occasionally, upstreams are very grumpy about it, and even demand their app is removed from f-droid.org.

eighthave,

@danb @webmink @fdroidorg We have some automated scans for license changes, but we always appreciate when people let us know when they see something. We have a harder problem than say Debian since #Android apps are basically all built using dependencies from #MavenCentral, which doesn't enforce that things published there are #FLOSS. https://f-droid.org/2022/07/22/maven-central.html

Interesting to see the Netherlands banning the use of mobile devices in the classroom. I totally understand why. My kids' school has basically the same policy. I wonder if a nation-wide ban will make other things difficult though. In Vienna, the school decides the policy. https://www.theguardian.com/world/2023/jul/04/mobile-phones-other-devices-to-be-banned-from-dutch-classrooms

For those who believe that the western liberal democracy is more effective than Chinese communism, consider that China is ahead of its #climate goals while western liberal democracies are behind. "Something is rotten in the state of Denmark" (Shakespeare quote, not singling out). If we are to prevent authoritarians from expanding, we need hold our governments to account. nanoelquant, to Ukraine Ukrainian
eighthave,

@nanoelquant I think this leaves out the part where #NATO started a 20 year #bullshit war in #Afghanistan, disasterous involvement in #Libya, and key NATO members invaded #Iraq because they wanted its oil. Sure, joining NATO could stop #Russia from invading, but then you're contributing to invading other countries.

eighthave,

@nanoelquant Switzerland and Sweden have been neutral for centuries, they were not taken over by the Nazis or Soviets, unlike all of their neighbors. So saying military alliances will save a country from invasions is overlooking actual history. It is not that simple.

eighthave,

@nanoelquant Joining military alliances also means getting dragged into the wars of other countries. You can see that over the history of #NATO. Right now, it is plain to see how Putin is leaning on Belarus to join in the war of Ukraine, and tried with Kazakhstan too.

Consider #Trump does not seem to like NATO and could be the next US President https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2023/aug/04/john-bolton-trump-nato-2024

NATO won't let Ukraine join until the war is settled. After that, its not clear Ukraine benefits. Neutrality might work better

eighthave,

@nanoelquant And Austria and Finland provide possible examples of how neutrality could work for Ukraine. Austria was neutral while Soviet tanks rolled into our neighbors Hungary and Czechoslovakia. They did not invade Austria, even though militarily, it would have been simple for the Soviets to take over Austria. They had done it before. I know at lot less about it, but #Finland's situation during World War Two looks quite similar to Ukraine's now. Finland was neutral yet not invaded again.

eighthave,

@nanoelquant @Lazycog Austria's neutrality was also forced by a deal between the Soviet Union, France, UK, and USA. But it has worked, and is immensely popular in Austria now. Finland's situation now is quite different than both Ukraine and Austria. Finland was already spending more on than NATO's 2% requirement, and it has a long border with Russia. It will be interesting to see how the Finns feel about NATO when they have to join in some pointless yet devastating invasion like Afghanistan.

eighthave,

@nanoelquant @Lazycog yes exactly, Austria was forced by military invasion and occupation to become neutral. That occupation was mostly Russians and directed from Moscow. Now, neutrality is immensely popular with Austrians, and all but one minor political party fully support it. It can work very well, much better than any military alliance, so #Ukraine really should keep it in consideration, especially because its clear they won't be allowed into #NATO any time soon.

eighthave,

@szbalint @nanoelquant @Lazycog That logic presumes that NATO decreases war. The evidence is pretty clear that NATO just shifts wars outside of NATO. That is not anything I think a democratic and anti-war Europe should take part in. That line of reasoning is exactly what the PR firms of NATO weapons industry is spending lots of money pushing. Austria contributes by supporting global diplomacy, there is a good reason why things like the Iran Nuclear Deal is handled in Vienna.

eighthave, to Matrix

I like #Matrix and #Signal both for group communications, but there are still many things that #email does much better. For example, I often want to quickly preview a message to see if I want to deal with it now. If not, then I leave it marked unread. Not possible all the messenger apps I've tried. That leads to slower response times because I won't open messages until I'm fully ready to deal with something more complicated. Maybe #DeltaChat is the best direction for the long term.

eighthave,

@vitriolix I didn't know #Slack did that. I find Slack's UX to be over-complicated and put too much emphasis on emojis. But I also haven't used it that much. I worry about #Matrix going too much in that direction, but I would like to at least try a "preview then mark unread" UX in Matrix.

eighthave, to nyc

#NYC way of dealing with work when it is hot: go from super hot subway platform to cold subway to frigid AC offices and keep working away.

#Vienna way of dealing with work when it is hot: no AC anywhere, if it is too hot to work, go to the nearest body of water and spend the rest of the day swimming.

I hear that attempts to backport curl patches have been made difficult by all my refactoring and that distros decided to upgrade the complete curl for you instead.

I am sorry about the time wasted, but not the outcome.😬

eighthave,

@bagder @mjgardner @icing In the case of well established, well documented, widespread protocols, I totally agree. There are other factors that change the equation. Is it a new protocol? Are the docs good? Do the people involved in implementing have a means to communicate? And human input changes the equation in a big way. No one expects humans to type HTTP, TLS, or TCP.

We need an alternative to #FDroid that uses #IPFS

eighthave,

@jr @Wyndix It is supported in the latest version of the official client. You have to enable it in an expert preference. The https://guardianproject.info/fdroid repo is also shipped on IPFS.

I know this will lead to a heated debate, but I have to agree with @Gargron.

Having to pick an instance/server is cited as the biggest hurdle to joining Mastodon, and dismissing people who feel this way is just plain rude.

Yes, the registration flow for Mastodon should be user-friendly. And yes, we need to live up to the promises of decentralized social media. We just need to get creative about our approach.

https://blog.joinmastodon.org/2023/05/a-new-onboarding-experience-on-mastodon/

eighthave,

@stefan @Gargron I've worked on #decentralized systems for many years now, including #XMPP clients, #Matrix, #Tor, and @fdroidorg and I think the new #Mastodon client onboarding experience is a good idea. But it also means there is a new slippery slope towards centralization, and it needs to be heeded and monitored to make sure it doesn't do more harm than good. The good news is that there are multiple, good clients, so that helps quite a bit.
