It is remarkable that almost 2500 years later, we still find news about Plato, who died in 348 BC. I wonder if we'll still care about Taylor Swift in April 4524? https://www.theguardian.com/books/2024/apr/29/herculaneum-scroll-plato-final-hours-burial-site?CMP=Share_iOSApp_Other

Just to balance things out, tell me an artist, that as far as you know, seems to be a decent person, as well as a great artist!

drian,

@MylesRyden @RickiTarr Suzanne Vega, she replied to my offer of borrowing my dogs for a walk on the beach when she played in Auckland a few years ago. I was surprised an artist would reply directly to a fan. We had a good conversation and she seems a genuine, friendly person.

drian,

@MylesRyden @RickiTarr Steve Wozniak, “Woz”, Apple co-founder. I invited him to go on a Segway tour in Devonport when he was visiting Auckland on a speaking tour a decade ago. He accepted my offer and was really friendly and open and would talk about anything. We spent the whole morning together and he was very good company. When we parted he gave me his card with his home address and telephone number on, which I thought very trusting. I’ve never dared call him!

"Moderators of r/Dune said they’ve been removing AI-generated art from the community for months."

Lol the irony

If you've read Dune, you know that in that universe, they no longer allow computers or AI to exist.

Who out there remembers #hypercard ?
My first project was a patient database for dentist father. It was so easy to use even he could cope with it.

Happy birthday #chatgpt one year old today. I asked it to make itself a birthday card (1st attempt top image) and then to give it a steampunk feel (bottom image). Happy birthday !🎂 🎉

Austrian Actress Hedy Lamarr (Hedwig Eva Maria Kiesler) was born #OTD in 1914 (not 1913).

At the beginning of World War II, she and avant-garde composer George Antheil developed a radio guidance system for Allied torpedoes that used spread spectrum and frequency hopping technology to defeat the threat of jamming by the Axis powers. Though it was never used in wartime, this device is a component of present-day satellite and cellular phone technology. via @wikipedia

What is your first experience with the Internet? How old were you? What did you look at?

drian,

@RickiTarr 1985, my MSc supervisor was Richard Bartle at Essex University. He co-authored MUD one of the first online multiplayer games. Only available within JANET (Joint Academic NETwork) at the time which connected UK universities before the Internet. I also used to email my friends in other Universities.

I was fortunate to see #tinaturner live in 1984 on her comeback tour in a small venue. That gig remains one of my Top 5 Gigs - she was breathtaking, a truly marvellous performer. This set from the UK's iconic Tube captures the energy of those early shows (watch out for Annie Lennox in the audience).
Did I mention the support band was an unknown Huey Lewis & the News? Oh, and she opened with a Bowie song— truly unique RIP.

Essential reading; great potential but also terrifying. These developments are precisely why AI must consider ethics. What would China do if it could read the thoughts of its people? https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2023/may/01/ai-makes-non-invasive-mind-reading-possible-by-turning-thoughts-into-text?CMP=Share_iOSApp_Other
