Some people might argue that "IBDNS, the “intentionally broken” DNS server" isn't necessary. 😜

"Because of the lack of clear signals of general adoption of DNSSEC over three decades, is it time to acknowledge that DNSSEC is just not going anywhere? Is it time to call it a day for DNSSEC and just move on?"

@gjherbiet @jpmens @bortzmeyer @icing Been awhile since I looked, but do either Bind or NSD have built-in automated key rotation?

There are add-on scripts to do this, and it’s not that hard to roll your own. But until automated key rollover is built in to major authoritative servers then IMO DNSSEC will remain stuck in neutral.

Another jaw-dropping JWST shot, with some mane-raising science:

The iconic Horsehead nebula is getting slowly eaten away by the ferocious light of a nearby star.

If, by slowly, you mean rapidly enough to dissolve our entire Moon every seven years.

WHY DID NO ONE TELL ME YOU CAN WAX BICYCLE CHAINS WITH BEESWAX?!?!

(yes, yes... I'm a beekeeper).

#BikeTooter #wax #beekeeping

davidnewman,
@davidnewman@mastodon.social avatar

@dr2chase @ai6yr The high-end stuff isn’t “just” beeswax or more typically paraffin but also different sizes of tungsten disulfide beads, which apparently helps improve bonding and prevent corrosion.

The initial stripping* and hot melt is time-consuming, or you can buy pre-waxed chains for $$$. After that, routine maintenance is easy – and a lot less messy than oil.

*Chains ship from the factory coated in something like cosmolene, which should be removed before using any kind of lube.

I’m not aware of a OpenWRT-like project to run Linux or BSD on old Cisco hardware.

@ai6yr @dynode @bud_t A useful tire pressure resource:

https://silca.cc/pages/sppc-form

After years of running high pressures (110+ psi on 21s and 23s), I’ve been finding lower and wider (<= 70 psi on 25s) is both faster and more comfortable.

For some a position of power and prominence insulates them from criticism, for others it's a magnifying glass.

How do each of us contribute to this pattern?

Why not burn Nixon alive instead of pardoning him, for example?

@queenofnewyork @futurebird What do you think he had on the GOP leadership? Aside from ordering then GOP-chair GHWB to obstruct justice in the Spiro Agnew investigation, I’m not aware of others outside the administration involved in Watergate.

Kudos to the JAL flight attendants who safely evacuated nearly 400 passengers and crew in 90 seconds from a burning jet.

A Japanese culture of civic-mindedness certainly may have helped, but it’s also a reminder that safety is Job One for flight crews everywhere.

@ai6yr a nice day on a vintage ride…that saddle angle, though!

davidnewman,
@davidnewman@mastodon.social avatar

@ai6yr As a teenager I raced on 19mm tubulars but the trend over the past 20 years is to go wider and wider, and also to reduce air pressure. Currently “normal” for road bikes is in the 25-28mm range, provided your wheels and frame/fork allow them.

The right saddle is the one that makes you most comfortable. Almost all bike fitters aim to get the saddle level or nearly level.

Truly loathe travel sites -- an airline in this case -- where the price goes up significantly in the middle of the search. It's damn close to bait and switch.

davidnewman,
@davidnewman@mastodon.social avatar

@dangillmor Sorry you experienced this.

It’s not new. When I covered the travel industry in the mid to late 1980s, the airlines even then used sophisticated “yield management” algorithms to change ticket prices on a second-by-second basis in response to demand. The first online reservation system, AA’s Sabre, dates to 1953, and the industry has been tinkering ever since, especially post deregulation. #gotchacapitalism

Driven by 55+-mph gusts, the #SouthFire in Somis grew from 4 to around 800 acres during the day, and has prompted mandatory evacuations in Somis and evacuation warnings in Saticoy and Santa Paula. There is an evacuation shelter running at Ventura Community College.

Yes, Link Wray, THE god of power chord rock n' roll, refusing to be pidgeon-holed into one kind of music is here performing a jazz standard.

The modern equivalent would be Taylor Swift performing a Metallica tribute song.

@Hawkmoon Even in the roughest bars, Link could silence a crowd with classical and jazz standards. There was no other like him.
