It just clicked in my brain. What I haven't been able to articulate about why I'm so anxious about #Windows Recall. I'm sure others have already gotten to where I am.

It's worse than "a system that tracks everything you do" and stores that info in a basic database that could be easily compromised.
It's worse than a nanny surveillance tool for companies to spy on their employees.

It's inescapable.

It doesn't matter if I make a dozen "how to disable recall" tutorials. The second YOUR data shows up on someone ELSE'S screen, it's in THEIR recall database.

It won't matter if you're a master #security expert specialist. You can't account for EVERY other computer you've ever interacted with. If a family member looks up an old email with your personal data in it, your data is now at risk.

If THEIR system is compromised YOUR data is at risk.

I just went from "vague feeling of unease" to "actively writing templates to canvas elected officials, regulators, and attorneys general."

@davemark @lapcatsoftware YES. I still have my old 2015 MBP and have had to have that done twice because the Battery kept swelling up. Started happening a third time and was just out of Warranty/AppleCare, and was told it’d be like $650! Ended up just buying a new Laptop.

@davemark - Every company on Earth markets idealized versions of their products, which often pale under real-world scrutiny. BYD (and even Apple) is no exception.

As with Apple, I see a lot of the mainstream press (especially) regurgitating BYD's marketing spin with no critical analysis.

BYD is touting decent EV range combined with remarkable fuel range to acheive that 1300 mile range. But they haven't indicated how they tested. Is that city driving? highway? a combo? Top speed? (1/2)

  • 100% US tariff on Chinese EVs makes it a $26K car.

  • The $13,000 model is Corolla-sized. Corollas sell in the US, but we're a land of SUVs, pickup trucks and CUVs, not compacts (largely because "light truck" CAFE loopholes exist).

  • It hasn't undergone NHTSA evaluation, which would likely force significant engineering changes and cost increases.

  • BYD has zero retail sales/ service footprint in the US. That will take BILLIONS to build out.

@bazscott @davemark BYD Americas CEO Stella Lee told Yahoo Finance earlier this year that BYD had no plans to bring its EVs to the US market. End of story.

""It's an interesting market, but it's very complicated if you're talking about EVs," she said.

So outside (or perhaps more accurately because) of the myriad regulatory, legislative, and logistical challenges it would face, BYD simply doesn't have the will to make it happen here.

Everything can change, but that's the state of play now.

On the rumored Mac foldable, here's a link to the Yoga book 9i, which does what Apple seems to be aiming at.

Follow the link, start clicking through the photos at the top. Seems a bit unwieldy to me, a bulk/weight tradeoff for the extra screen real estate.

Worth it? Will Apple find a way to make the tradeoff work?

@davemark I don't think Apple will make a foldable-screen Mac. iPad, maybe. iOS (/iPadOS) already adapts from tall and narrow to wide, so it makes sense that iOS apps would be able to run folded (iPhone form factor) or open (iPad).

I think Macs will continue to be computers, not touch-first interface. Or at the very least, a traditional single screen and physical keyboard clamshell model will continue to be offered.

@davemark Now I know how old a t-shirt I have is. When they opened that store, they gave out t-shirts at an Apple beer bust at Infiniye Loop. The shirts were in plastic tubes. Mine is still in that tube.

Samsung TV Plus is free and has a TON of content, both live and on demand.

You will have to sign up for an account, but Apple's "Hide My Email" works just fine. The signup process is VERY buggy, but press on, you'll get there.

@davemark VPN operators see all your DNS queries, every web site you visit, ever connection you make. They know when you’re using Signal, Telegram, WhatsApp, iMessage, whatever. Without the VPN your ISP sees all this. Choose your monetizing snoop wisely.
To my original point, free from Samsung makes the user the product. What data about you will they pilfer? Just your watching habits? That’s never enough for the other snoops. Device fingerprints, apps installed, mouse tracking? Touch tracking? Keystroke tracking? Will they poke through your file system? Stick you with more cookies to track elsewhere? Do they turn on microphones or cameras? Listen via your accelerometers? And so forth.

  • Each precinct will get rooftop drone platform
  • Calling it “drones as first responders”

This a good thing? Drones can certainly get eyes to an emergency quickly. Video footage admissible in court?

Privacy implications? Will people be shooting these down?

The new iPad Pro "Nano-texture glass" is ONLY available in models with 1TB or more of storage (not in the 2 lowest tier models).

Which brings the base price for nano glass up to a min of:

  • $1699 for the 11"
  • $1899 for the 13"

My 2 cents:

ALL car OSes (CarPlay, Android Auto, etc.) should support all users:

  • My phone should connect automatically as soon as I get in the car.
  • The interface should be recognizable, easy to navigate, and fast.
  • No crashes. Ever.
  • All my apps should be supported, especially music (Apple Music and/or Spotify) podcasts (no matter the app) and Maps (Google/Apple).

If not, it's just green bubble, blue bubble all over again.

@davemark I think the auto connect might be hard with multiple people in the car. But it will require someone to come up with an open standard for restricting apps and ensuring they view correctly. I just don’t think anyone wants to do that. I’m not sure it’s even possible to be that middleman when both car manufacturers and Google / Apple probably dont want to pay someone else.

My Mac often REQUIRES my password, even though it has Touch ID.

Anyone know why this is? Shouldn't my fingerprint be enough to, say, install an update?

@davemark Apple has built in some protections for login (to allow you to shut down your Mac to make sure customs can't make you unlock your Mac with your fingerprint).

As to installations, I think some really security relevant things are behind the password only for similar reasons.

Also, if it's a third-party installer, they often ask for your password because they're just scripts running sudo, and can’t feed a fingerprint into the command line, only text, basically.

Wave of people getting locked out of their Apple ID.

Seems like a combination of being forced to change your password, and a delay imposed on people with "Stolen Device Protection" enabled.

Hoping this is something Apple can fix quickly.

@jarunmb @davemark One of my theories about this and my long running iCloud issues is that longer term users who have mac.com addresses at the root are more subject to these types of iCloud issues. My wife and other family members I support who also never had mac.com addresses did not experience this recent issue.

I’ve discussed that with various levels of Apple Support and TBH they just don’t want to entertain that as a possibility on the record in those discussions./1

@WarnerCrocker @davemark While I was reading your post about this, I got an email from Sanebox that the App Specific Password stopped working. Going to fix this next.

It’s interesting that my wife, son and daughter didn’t get locked when I did. The only difference I can tell is that they all use icloud.com addresses for their ID and I use my original mac.com address. Not sure if that has anything to do with it. Would be nice if Apple actually said something about what happened…

An original book by an unfamiliar author is a “risky” purchase, since entertainment is a matter of personal taste. And it’s not like a music album where you hear a song or two on the radio or streaming first.

I like to discover “obscure” novels. I check out a bunch from the library, start reading, and stop if I don’t like it, which is actually the majority of the time.
