This incredible story of this incredible student 😭

https://www.universityofcalifornia.edu/news/transfer-students-triumph-class-2024#manuel

I am so so so proud of @analog_ashley for funding, creating and leading the STARTneuro program. Incredible to see this amazing program have its first graduates.

"“STARTneuro is the best thing I’ve ever done in my life,” says Vasconcelos. “I love what I am doing, and I wouldn’t be where I am now if not for this program.”"

grimalkina,
@grimalkina@mastodon.social avatar

But guess what -- you can donate to this program if you wish!!

You can learn more about the program overall here: https://ugresearch.ucsd.edu/programs/all-urh-programs/start-neuro/index.html

They have a fund through UCSD: https://giveto.ucsd.edu/giving/home/gift-referral/8dfa8984-7da2-4d59-b762-92621fa6228e

I'm not involved in any way (except for sometimes hosting the scholars at a bbq at our house haha...and a lot of support to the program director), I just think this program is absolutely beautiful and more people should know about it. The future of science is for everyone.

@danilo I see no evidence those (hypothetical, for legal reasons) guys can or did actually generalize their realization to all women. Their behavior is better explained by trying to protect their property (daughters, and more to the point, their future grandsons)

"ADHD creates impulse control issues and, consequently, advertising takes advantage of a disability. Ergo, ad blockers are assistive devices and interfering with their operation for commercial gain constitutes a willful violation of the ADA."

Let’s do this.

Also happy Pride month...!

Because it is a far cry from my first gig in tech where someone told me to never come out in this industry to now be a proudly out queer leader who incorporates the important perspective of LGBTQ+ developers (a pov so rarely explored in this research) in findings, and gets to present such work to a big highly technical audience. The world is tough but the world is trying. Grateful for expansive communities that welcome me & redefine who is allowed to be "technical"

Hades is the perfect roguelike for lots of reasons, but one of the biggest IMO: unlike pretty much every other game in the genre, luck never singlehandedly ends a run.

You'll have good and bad luck, but you'll never lose immediately because of a bad spawn, or die over a bad draw, or meet a boss that's literally impossible to beat.

Hades perfectly gives luck sway without ever giving it control, and the more I die instantly/hopelessly in other roguelikes, the more I appreciate that balance.

Not only can a beginner developer, who is also a beginner user of your dev product, become a senior developer and an expert user of your product

but you can play a role in helping them get there.

YOU CAN BE THE REASON SOMEONE SUCCEEDS

It’s nearly impossible to get most orgs to understand this, much less strategize for it.

This kind of thing has been around the block for a bit -- the reality in my opinion is that "programming ability" is simply not something we've defined and possibly not a single thing. The many decades of interest in predicting programming ability have sometimes succeeded at pushing against our stereotypes that it is math associated (as this work), but "math ability" is ALSO a fraught measure. It's important to bring a lot of context to the prediction of ability...

IMO we need to dismantle the surveillance advertising biz model & the surveillance and centralized control at its heart.

But this doesn't do that. Instead, it advocates for 'transparency' w/o accountability + inexplicably ONLY names e2ee encryption as a "risk" to children.

What's clear here, broadly, are the sharp limits of shareholder-driven activism when it comes to curtailing a toxic-yet-profitable business model.

It's kinda heartening to see that a lot of the major tech news outlets are not giving AI stuff special treatment. In fact, they're being so honest that VCs and C*O's of very grifty AI companies are complaining and swearing off the press because they're being so utterly crucified in the review scene.

"Where do we go from here?"

It’s time we answer that together. Every great conversation I've had lately has come down to this question.

So: imagine an invite-only, one week community for our sociotechnical future. Async conversation exploring today’s terrain and tomorrow's ambitions, culminating in two hours of talks.
