So I've just been doing some tidying in the garage and I found this old #Compaq #Netbook. I've put it on charge, but do we think it will boot, and what OS do we think it's running?

@kev In one step or in multiple LTS steps? you'd probably have less issues reinstalling - but I'm 100% curious about the result!

New release of my things!

STP, my FTP client, is now much more usable. It gets search, is ported to non-enhanced Apple II, and more importantly can now transfer floppy images (.po and .dsk) to a floppy, in the same way that ADTPro does.

This means that if you make yourself an STP floppy (with ADTPro), you won't have to unplug your Apple II from the Surl proxy and plug it to your ADTPro computer to transfer other disk images anymore!

@santiago can't do that over serial! You need a few kb of buffer for that, that's why people need an uthernet or cffa3000

colin_mcmillen,
@colin_mcmillen@piaille.fr avatar

@santiago Right, that would be possible. A little amount of code, though :)

I was experimenting with the Quicktake protocol I documented in hopes of finding a way to turn its connection to 115kbps. Did not manage that but it looks like I managed to dump (part of?) its firmware! There are some funny/strange strings in it.

My wife and I recently discovered a bum gun in one of our bathrooms at home. It gave me quite the shock!

I've added a fullscreen option to my Apple II video player, for completeness. However, there simply isn't enough bandwidth for it to be enjoyable.

The Matrix rooftop scene, in fullscreen on the Apple IIc's screen. There are, on average, 7 frames per second.

colin_mcmillen,
@colin_mcmillen@piaille.fr avatar

@santiago TBH, I thought about it. Either a black line, or interlacing. But so far, I didn't even test it, because I think it'll look bad - and also, displaying half the lines only halves the bandwidth, whereas going from my usual size to fullscreen quadruples it; so that probably wouldn't be enough.
I should test it just to make sure.

colin_mcmillen,
@colin_mcmillen@piaille.fr avatar

@santiago You made me curious, I tested. It's much better than I thought it would be... Considering leaving that on in fullscreen mode. I'll do more tests :)

The same video, but only 1 out of 2 lines are displayed. This is remarkably not noticeable, and gets the framerate to 16fps

colin_mcmillen,
@colin_mcmillen@piaille.fr avatar

@santiago I wonder. It's a bit more work - right there, I can do it in the decoder; for proper interlacing I'd have to do it in the streamer, to account for dropped frames.
Also I suppose frame drops may become more noticeable if the interlacing speed decreases.

colin_mcmillen,
@colin_mcmillen@piaille.fr avatar

@santiago Oh! no, not that way. I thought even lines on page 0 and odd lines on page 1.
Interlacing by refreshing only half the lines would be ugly - I tried that, deferring some pixels until next frame, and it doesn't look good.

I've spent the weekend finding a more efficient solution to stream videos to my #AppleII and found one that gains me 1.5fps, here's some documentation about it. https://www.colino.net/wordpress/archives/2024/04/28/how-i-stream-audiovideo-through-an-apple-ii-serial-ports/

Sister Voyager 1's confirmation of the memory space reallocation of Flight Data Subsystem encoding of engineering data at the EL-40 engineering low data rate (40 bps) should be arriving at Deep Space Station 43 over the next 4-1/2 hours. The code was relocated to avoid damaged memory addresses that can no longer be reliably used. The Voyager engineering team believes that certain addresses or even a whole chip has been damaged or simply failed, causing the communications problems that have caused problems since last November.

colin_mcmillen,
@colin_mcmillen@piaille.fr avatar

@NSFVoyager2 the fact these folks are binary-patching a live system at a few bps and with a lag of almost two days blows my mind.
