The deskilling of web dev is harming the product but, more importantly, it's damaging our health – this is why burnout happens: https://www.baldurbjarnason.com/2024/the-deskilling-of-web-dev-is-harming-us-all/

@baldur Thank you! I left web dev in December, after working as a web dev since 1995. Even as a lifelong learner, the everyday pressure to stay current with tech was so exhausting. Another new framework? Why. What is wrong with the other hundred? Throw in feature bloat on platforms like WordPress, which I used to just make my workflow easier for clients. I feel extra happy that I got out before AI takes over.

NEW #TrumpTrial 🧵starts HERE. #Trump #legal

Remember: I cannot reply while live-posting, so plz use NFL (Not For Laffy.. no hashtag) so I can skip your replies. THANK YOU.

1/... Erica Orden:

Trump returned to courtroom accompanied by Eric, Lara Trump, + rest of entourage.

McB:

Back in overflow, the rules are as strict as ever—even Chris Hayes
gets ID'd.

"Press credentials?" a court officer demands, as another reporter gives a good natured, "You sure you're a member of the press, Chris?"

@GottaLaff NFL Seems like the expanded entourage is there to show solidarity with him against Michael Cohen. But I think that Trump and his supporters sense that this trail has gone south for him and they've missed an opportunity to turn it into a show trail. They wanted to turn the trial into a show trial, like Oliver North, but Trump lacks the skills to manage the lawyers. Witness how he clumsily prods them to object and engage in stunts.

Are you interested in Masonry layout?? Graphic design on the web?

We just published a 4,000 word blog post investigating the current stage of the Grid Level 3 specification and all the amazing things you can do with it: https://webkit.org/blog/15269/help-us-invent-masonry-layouts-for-css-grid-level-3/

If you design or build websites, please read and chime in with your thoughts.

@jensimmons I've worked with CSS for what, twenty years, and been a web dev since 1995. Yes, we want this. Masonry layout would solve so many problems for my art and photography websites. Even today I had to fire up Gimp to resize photos for different aspect ratios.

To answer your questions:

Yes, Trump’s vile quote is being covered on MSM, and no, the GOP Fascist Party doesn’t care.

Via Aaron Rupar:

On CNN, Sen. Mike Rounds, who hasn't endorsed Trump yet, defends warning of a "bloodbath" if he loses in November and indicates he will support him in the general election

chuck,
@chuck@breadandroses.cloud avatar

@GottaLaff Just walked by a parent watching Fox News and it sounds like the network is criticizing other media for quoting him out of context. Something, something about a metaphor? Got to spin it so Fox watchers don't start having independent thoughts if they catch other media talking about the "bloodbath" comment.

@pluralistic has written and talked about Ad Blockers being one of the biggest, successful consumer boycotts in history. Popular , MoistCr1TiKaL (penguinz0), has a wonderful video rant about how much ad blockers are needed to use the web. Hard to overstate how enshittified and botshitted Google Maps has become. Went looking for my local locksmith on Gmaps. Maps shows 20+ fake locksmith referral scam outlets and doesn't even register the real locksmith, despite it being fully visible in Street View.

Instead, a red pin on the shop identifies it as a fake locksmith scammer. The real locksmith - which has been there SINCE 1942 (!!) and is a verified merchant - doesn't even show up.

Google Maps, showing the storefront for Golden State Lock as an empty building.

@moz @pluralistic As a web developer, I have often found that home services businesses are too busy to bother with updated websites. I once worked with a top tier house painter who didn't want a website because he got jobs via referrals. Also, many companies see the Google search preview to be enough of a digital calling card.

One thing that still baffles me after 25+ years working as a digital journalist, is why traditional news media websites still refuse to link to business websites in stories about the business. I feel this acutely as a food writer now. Why can't you link to a restaurant's website or list their address and contact information? Your readers expect that basic information.

This year's Christmas Bird Count was possibly the best one I've participated in. I walked for almost six miles, saw 89 birds from 22 species, was not freezing, wet, or miserable, and caught this action woodpecker shot entirely by accident. I used the Merlin app to help me figure out what I was looking at and it was very helpful. A few more pictures at the link.

@jessamyn I love using Merlin, though I haven't used it yet for a winter bird count. I love discovering species I had no idea existed in places I've birded for decades. It's also fun eliminating the false positives. Pileated woodpecker? Nope. Yellow billed cuckoo? Wow, they exist along the Missouri River.
