After over a week, I finally resumed making music, and it's so fun. It was just a 30 minutes jam, but I already feel hyped.

Like most months, I'm taking part in a composing challenge. This time I have to make a track using only exotic scales.

Here's what I have so far

#ShowYourWork #MusicProduction

c_gurra,

Some step forwards in making this track. I've added a couple of instruments to build a harmonic progression.

I also made the rhythmic part for a bridge in which the tempo goes up to 150bpm, and the signature goes from 19/8 to 7/8 with a 6/8 transition.

c_gurra,

Adding some variations and laying out the melody. However, I feel like I'm losing the direction on this, and there is too much going on, so I might have to simplify something.

c_gurra,

I can say I'm done with the arrangement. I still have to fix some stuff and then get to mixing https://audio.com/gullo/audio/rmcc7-240208

#MusicProduction #ShowYourWork

c_gurra,

Today I closed all the composition/arrangement stuff and started working on the mix. I'm pretty happy with it for now, but the distorted slap bass is pretty difficult to deal with

I had to take a "forced" break from music because I was busy moving to a new house. Today I finally found a bit of stability, but I still haven't made any music.

So I'm dedicating myself to #BandcampFriday for the first time (always missed it and pretty new to BC).

First, I want to share some cool stuff that just joined my collection and which I strongly recommend.

Then, I'm happy to announce that I finally found the time to get my stuff together and put something on my Bandcamp!

c_gurra,
  1. This #BonkWave compilation. It's still not clear to me what Bonkwave is, but it sounds great!

https://bonkknobrecords.bandcamp.com/album/not-what-i-call-bonk-wave-volume-002-disc-b

  1. some of my favourite tracks from @Weru, the ones that make me think of a gentle soul
    https://chillway.bandcamp.com/track/gateway-to-focus-15
    https://chillway.bandcamp.com/album/moonlight-dream

  2. Some sick grooves from @yoniden that got stuck in my head for quite a while

c_gurra,

Finally, my first release on #Bandcamp.

It's not really an album, just a collection of the things I did during #Jamuary. I hope to finish my first EP soon and share it with you.

For now, please enjoy this, make it yours for free if you want, sample it or do whatever you like!

#Jamuary 13th - Time Signature :13/8. There are some 12/8 bars too, but where? 👀

An extra challenge for today was to use only sounds from the #SNES game Donkey Kong Country (+ #Ableton's audio effects).

For what concerns harmony, instead of having chord progressions, I changed key from bar to bar. It's all Phrygian, but moves from E to G etc.

Today's #TuneTuesday by @Kitty is about songs that make me happy.

"Bachethead" by Buckethead.

I remember always smiling when listening to this track, although it has no lyrics. I was thinking something like "Buckethead must have been so amused while playing a track inspired by Bach and making the "Bachethead" pun", so I was amused as well.

New track. It's an uptempo Afrobeat track. I previously demoed it on the show your work hashtag. This is the finished mixed and mastered version.

https://chillway.bandcamp.com/track/let-our-bodies-do-the-talking

c_gurra,

@Weru I really like this kind of light hearted track. And the way you used sounds from a different language to give your own meaning is cool too. Did you play the guitar on this?

c_gurra,

@Weru nice. I was curious because I read you are a guitarist, so it would be nice to hear some of that in some tracks 😁

c_gurra,

@Weru I think it's cool when you end up doing different things, it's where you learn the most. But I'm glad you're trying to use guitar.

I'm a super beginner with guitar and I wouldn't be able to make a track based on it, but it turns out to be an amazing sound generator. By manipulating its sound you can come up with a very interesting sound design that works really well in electronic music. And I think that if someone can actually play the instruments, like you, cool things can happen

My first blog post! https://diskoverymusic.wordpress.com/2023/07/21/finishing-my-first-commission/

I couldn't work on any track today because I was busy with other music-related stuff, but I'm glad I at least managed to reflect on my recent learnings and share the result with you ⚡🎶

@carliermusic That's something I'd love to do as well! Did you ever do any game jam?

Bass stereo width might be my favorite music production "rule" to break.

Right now I'm working on something with stupidly wide bass and I'm not even sorry.

c_gurra,

@ektotherm as far as I know this "rule" is used to avoid phase cancellation on mono system. I always think "well, what if I don't care if this song is not played mono?" Is that the same you're thinking?

Today I worked on #mixing my track, following the advice of my teacher. I worked with reverb and especially with saturator, to make it sound more organic and warmer.

Despite using it previously, I think only today I understood how a saturator actually works, and I feel like it's gonna be hard to master, but very powerful.

Thanks to https://www.youtube.com/@inthemix and https://www.youtube.com/@LNADoesAudioStuff for helping me with their tutorials.

Here's the result of today's work
#Showyourwork #MusicProduction #ableton

video/mp4

c_gurra,

@Weru as far as I understand, it adds harmonics to your sound. This way the sound feels richer. However, by increasing the volume of the harmonics (as well as the fundamental), you can also obtain distortion.

This process depends a lot on the type of saturator that you are using, some are good for making the sound feel warmer, others are better for brightening.

This video made it a lot clearer for me, this guy is amazing https://youtu.be/n6ew5mMN2pQ

c_gurra,

@mc that would be nice! Honestly I don't even know what happens in the mastering process, so I'm interested. Maybe I can share this track with you once I'm done mixing

c_gurra,

@Weru Glad it helped! Are there other channels like this you'd recommend?

Personally I also love https://www.youtube.com/@OscarUnderdog for the cool tutorials and https://www.youtube.com/@VenusTheory for his approach
