Linux laptop and smartphone company Purism has done a lot to help make Linux usable as a smartphone OS. But the company burns through a lot of good will by charging high prices for its hardware (the price of a Librem 5 smartphone has more than doubled since it first launched), taking years to ship devices to folks who pre-order, and then delaying or denying refunds. https://forums.puri.sm/t/louiss-rossman-on-purism/21009/7

Microsoft is following through on its promise to pull the plug on Cortana for Windows. An update rolling out now disables the app and shows a message saying Cortana in Windows is deprecated. Uninstalling it altogether requires a bit of work though. https://www.neowin.net/news/microsoft-deprecates-the-cortana-app-on-windows-11-devices-as-it-reaches-end-of-support/ #Cortana #CortanaForWindows #Windows #VoiceAssistant #VirtualAssistant #Microsoft

Xebec Snap turns a laptop into a triple-screen computer with portrait and landscape mode (crowdfunding)

A few years ago a company called Xebec launched a crowdfunding campaign for a Tri-Screen accessory that lets you add two 10.1 inch displays to a laptop, turning any your notebook into a mobile, triple-display workstation. Now Xebec is back with a bigger, more versatile multi-display system called Xebec Snap. This time the displays are 13.3 inches. They support…

@vitriolix There's a kickstand to help with the weight, and the screens would probably fall off before the hinge would break :)

@voxpelli I know, but the #WordPress plugin responsible for posting this to Mastodon doesn't incorporate hashtags. I'd love it if #automattic would add an option to automatically use Wordpress post tags as hashtags... just saying.

@voxpelli @pfefferle @tantek.com@tantek.com @snarfed.org@snarfed.org I'm using the social feature built into Automattic's Jetpack plugin.

@bradlinder@fosstodon.org avatar

@voxpelli @pfefferle I did explore that option a few months ago, but it felt a little too complicated for my needs at the time. Maybe I'll revisit one day if I ever find myself with free time (ha!)

For now the Jetpack plugin seems like the simplest option that doesn't involve turning my server into a fediverse node. Automattic conveniently added support for Mastodon shortly after the service formerly known as Twitter pulled the plug on their free API.

Part of the reason Amazon Fire TV devices are so cheap is that Amazon uses the home screen for ads and to direct you to its own apps and services. So the company tries to block you from using third-party launchers.
