Picked up a Dell Wyse 5070, plus a Mini-PCIe 2.5Gb card to swap out my OpnSense router, which worked great. Runs like a dream.

So, I’ve ordered another one but in the ‘extended’ size which also takes a half-height PCIe card. I ordered a single 8GB RAM stick for it, to complement the 4GB it came with. Worked Great.

So, I ordered a single 16GB stick. I’ve read it CAN run 32GB of memory. We shall see!

Now, to pick what to load into that PCIe slot. I’d love an AI capable low-power graphics card..

Sort of looking at maybe upgrading my camera soon and kind of stuck between sticking with MFT or moving to APS-C or full frame.

At some point I'd like to try some astro-photography.

It'll suck to have to buy a whole new batch of lenses though

What a wild day.

Posting here about KVM live migrations and working to explain to a(n excellent) junior admin how routers work, gateways, hops, and what ttl means in his ping and traces.

Then, just as I’m winding down, another junior admin mentioned he agreed to do a SQL DB Migration tonight for one of our clients. I’m sure that won’t end up on my plate in a few hours… 🫠

Topslakr,
@Topslakr@fosstodon.org avatar

@mike805 I can try some more complex VMs, for sure, but so far it’s been great. No issues. VM moves, a ping is dropped, and the VM remains running as it had been.

Topslakr,
@Topslakr@fosstodon.org avatar

@mike805 That’s part of my tests.

Both hosts, for the sake of the config file, need to have storage paths to the same place, but virsh/virt-manager/cockpit-machines can migrate machines on shared storage or, in fact, move the storage too.

So, a VM with its disks stored in ‘/VMs’ can be moved to a new host. If ‘/VMs’ is, for instance, an NFS share it’ll just move the VM. If it’s not shared storage, you get the option to move the disks too, provided you can create an identical disk path.

Is there anyway I can Fedi block America without blocking Americans, most of whom are totally cool?

Actually, can that be outside my telephone as well?

Life would be a lot less annoying.

@mxtthxw American here.

I’d also like to do that…

Anyone using oVirt, or switching to it from VMware?

#sysadmin #VMWare #askfedi

Topslakr,
@Topslakr@fosstodon.org avatar

@apgarcia Wow. This is a GREAT idea. I’ve heard much mention of Proxmox, and XCP-NG, but oVirt would be a far simpler change for a lot of VMWare Engineers. I should spin it up to play with again. It’s been too long..

Topslakr,
@Topslakr@fosstodon.org avatar

@fedops @apgarcia This is what I do in my home lab, on Debian Bookworm. I’d want to do some more aggressive testing work though to see how I could make live migrations, etc., work. I know it’s possible, it’s just not something I need here.

I was talking to someone on ‘Practical ZFS’ earlier this week about this too.

If you’d like to see how an Ansible newb sets that up:

@fedops @apgarcia Now I’m thinking about a fun weekend project to test this all out…

Topslakr,
@Topslakr@fosstodon.org avatar

@fedops @apgarcia So, closing the loop on this..

It was a LOT easier than expected.

I setup a 2nd Debian 12 KVM host. Shared SSH keys for password-less logins. Setup NFS share for the VM disk.Added the 2nd system to my ‘Virt-Manager’ dashboard.

I created a Debian VM, on the NFS share.

Right-clicked the VM and selected Migrate. I used ‘Tunneled’ Migration to use SSH. Took moments. Dropped 1 ping from a different machine.

Topslakr,
@Topslakr@fosstodon.org avatar

@fedops @apgarcia In addition, I tried another test. All the core bits are the same, minus shared storage.

The process took a bit longer, since it had to copy to the disk, but the host had the same experience. Just the one dropped ping.

As you probably know, the dropped ping is expected, since the host now appears on the network from a different physical interface.

But, this worked great using only stable, free, and open source tooling. Pretty neat!

Topslakr,
@Topslakr@fosstodon.org avatar

@fedops @apgarcia Shared storage is what I would do too, given the option. But, if you’re running hyper-convereged, it’s nice to know it’s possible.

For Non-Shared storage - Yes. The tooling to migrate has an option to copy the storage. In virsh it’s ‘—copy-storage-all’.

Tested with virt-manager, cockpit-machines, and virsh without issues both shared and non.

I wouldn’t want to run VMs without ZFS, and am happily using ZFS Snaps being pulled to replica servers for offsite.

I returned to work today, after an excellent week off, and was delighted that my team did very well while I was out.

Sadly, another team went out of their way to create issues that my team had to jump in and try to solve. They did great with them, but were a bit of out of their depth.

Today has been needlessly stressful and a number of clients are pretty annoyed.

Much as I’d love not to be bothered on vacation, a two minute call or a text could have saved a lot of strife for all involved.

The #Amtrak Downeaster is packed this morning! I’ve never seen it so full, and we grabbed one of the last parking spots too. It’s school vacation week, but there aren’t a lot of kids on board…

Gearing up for a couple train rides next week. We’re going to be traveling to Washington, DC for a few days.

I always queue up a pile of fun things to work on while riding the train and then find myself totally absorbed by the scenery rolling by instead…

Good afternoon!

I’m back to work after a long weekend, following my week of illness.

Today’s job is pretty intensive on the front end, but I’m rewarded with a 2.5 hour break at London Bridge later.

I drive from Gillingham to Luton and straight back to London Bridge for my break.

After my break, I drive to Gillingham, where I’m done for the day.

Whilst at London Bridge, I may treat myself to some nice dinner… I haven’t decided what yet!
