Spent considerable time this AM wiring up some MIDI cables to my effects units, and learning about MIDI Beat Clock. Pretty neat to see the tempo change in the DAW and the delays change to match.

Love this stuff!

Full day off. First of the month. I really need to spend time getting the accounting caught up.

Topslakr,
@Topslakr@fosstodon.org avatar

@mack505 You probably should do that… what are you going to do instead?

With respect to my friends in the Granite State, I have muted the words ‘New Hampshire’ and ‘NH’ for the next three days.

As well as ‘primaries’ and ‘primary’ forever.

I’ll have to forgo mountain photos and hiking stories for a few days.

@mack505 I live in … that place … and have done the same. 🫠

@jerzone Not as good as ‘Magic’ but I always thought it was a solid unit.

Topslakr,
@Topslakr@fosstodon.org avatar

@jerzone Yes. The ‘Mighty Mouse’. Once you learned to use it it was good, but you could only have one finger touch the mouse when you clicked. It couldn’t differentiate what was being clicked when two fingers touched it…

Those side buttons were map’d to forward and back, for web browsing I believe…

I do a fair bit of audio and video editing, and the ability to scroll in any direction was worth the ‘pain’ of it’s other short comings.

Is anyone using #RealVNC viewer on #macOS #Sonoma? I see it's still not officially supported (last supported version is Ventura), and that there are some open tickets. I've been holding off upgrading to Sonoma because of this.

Topslakr,
@Topslakr@fosstodon.org avatar

@fullyabstract I do not. I stopped using it in favor of the VNC Viewer built into macOS instead. Any chance that’s an option for you too?

NH primary is next week. I live within a baseball throw of NH.

Time to unplug the TV.

@jerzone @mack505 I’d be thrilled to get just one or two each day… Most days we’re getting six! I’m surprised anyone has that many ideas for mailers!

I'm going to try and set up Tailscale DNS to point at my pihole, so I can have pihole on my phone every where.

Topslakr,
@Topslakr@fosstodon.org avatar

@btp Nope. Pretty easy. Leave MagicDNS on, override local DNS, and then put in the IP(s) if your PiHole(s).

I also add the ‘search domain’ I use on my local net to make resolving machines by their hostname easier for devices on Tailscale too.

Topslakr,
@Topslakr@fosstodon.org avatar

@btp Is you PiHole on Tailscale directly, or are you routing to it via some other subnet router? My PiHoles are behind a subnet router, so I use their internal IPs, but perhaps you need to use their Tailscale IPs?

Topslakr,
@Topslakr@fosstodon.org avatar

@btp Ha! Wow. Nice work.

Topslakr,
@Topslakr@fosstodon.org avatar

@btp I have, for whatever reason, resisted putting Tailscale on a LOT of machines in favor of putting it onto my OpnSense router, and my portable machines.

Interesting to see how changes like that impact the config to accomplish the same tasks.

@felimwhiteley You've worn me down. I last used KDE in the V3 Days (On Mandrake, if you can believe it...)

But, I installed KDE on my Debian laptop yesterday, via the testing branch.

(I'd love to use the RC of Plasma 6 but I don't see a tidy way to do that on this install...)

Still has strong 'We're like Windows' vibes to me, but it's working well and I'll keep running it for at least the remainder of the month.

MATE has been usurped, at least for now!

Topslakr,
@Topslakr@fosstodon.org avatar

@felimwhiteley I could to that. I’ll need to put it in a few more places to see how it would impact my other workflows on other systems too. Interesting idea.

Topslakr,
@Topslakr@fosstodon.org avatar

@felimwhiteley I gave up on this. Adding KDE to Debian Bookworm, and testing, was not good. Total mess. Unstable. Slow. Lots of issues, like not being able to minimize certain apps properly, and Nextcloud’s client running but just being totally invisible…

I’m giving it one more shot though. I am going to install Neon directly onto my laptop. Surely, the experience directly from KDE will be stronger…

Topslakr,
@Topslakr@fosstodon.org avatar

@felimwhiteley Wow. Won't even boot properly. I can see it tries.. then it all goes black and it loads for ages.

Then, it stays black..

I guess I'll try KDE again in 10 more years...

Topslakr,
@Topslakr@fosstodon.org avatar

@felimwhiteley Could well be my system. The hardware I was using is a Chromebook. It works great for Debian, and Fedora, but it’s not exactly ‘standard’. You seem so passionate about KDE, I wanted to try and give it a real go, but alas it wasn’t to be.

The Debian KDE installs worked fine, but KDE wasn’t great. Perhaps that’s down to how Debian sets it up? I don’t know. Still feels like a GUI trying to be Windows, especially with those Windows Vista-esque desktop widgets.

Topslakr,
@Topslakr@fosstodon.org avatar

@fedops @felimwhiteley I’ll try another clean Debian install, with KDE, and see how I go! Thanks.

Topslakr,
@Topslakr@fosstodon.org avatar

@fedops @felimwhiteley Wow. What a difference a clean install makes! A lot of the obvious red flags are gone, like Nextcloud’s desktop client just being invisible.

Ok - New Test! I’ll give THIS a shot the month.

I had taken my MATE install and told apt to install KDE’s desktop, but it wasn’t ‘proper’. It’s these sorts of things that make me still miss CentOS/Fedora. ‘dnf groupinstall’ is a powerful option!

Topslakr,
@Topslakr@fosstodon.org avatar

@fedops @felimwhiteley Ahh, yes. Meta packages. That’s the name.

That is what I used to install KDE onto my existing Debian install. I used ‘apt install kde-plasma-desktop’. Which did work, it just didn’t deliver the same experience as a clean install with KDE selected as the GUI. Perhaps ‘kde-full’ would have been better…

Oh well.

(Still miss yum/dnf though. I’ve never warmed to apt)

tasksel though. That’s a new one for me. That is what I SHOULD have used for sure!

I hate that when you click on a feature image to a link on @MonaApp, it opens the image, not the link. This is contrary to the behaviour EVERYWHERE else.

Is there any way to change this?

Phones all went off with a snow squall warning late this afternoon.
“What the..."

Sure enough, a short time later it was coming down so heavy we couldn't see neighbor's house and then couldn't see our own trees. Hour or so later we had another one.

@jerzone Got the same ‘down’ here. It was all the prompting I needed to grab my camera and head out! Finally, a bit of winter to enjoy!

Total whiteout, and we got a few inches in a short time. Great evening walk!

One of the fun parts about getting into a new hobby is being able to take a new look at established trends and question the need. Case in point, I decided to build a small system for myself while keeping to a minimum budget. I believe I've done so as it sounds amazing to me, but I do have a few upgrades that I'm waiting on. I attribute this to me being a bit rushed to build something for the holidays and not thinking things through, due to not understanding fully. But I'm satisfied with my last purchases and honestly can't see much more being added on afterwards.

But I have looked at what else I can add and decided it's just not worth it. Specifically a CD player (or CD Transport as some "audiophiles" call them) as well as a tape deck. First, I don't have enough media to warrant either one. Secondly, I already have a record player that I'll eventually upgrade once I build up a proper vinyl collection, so why spend more money on yet more media? I have a dedicated media player, a TIDAL subscription, and I'm quite pleased.

So yeah, I've built up a system from components from AliExpress and Amazon, but it sounds amazing to me and I don't care if I'm not "audiophile" enough for some folks. I do still need a sub just to round things out, and maybe one last amp if I really want to worry about cross-channel contamination, but I don't see that as an issue right now. I think once the new amp and DAC arrive, the next upgrade is some op amps and the sub, but then I'm done. I don't need a 7.1 or Atmos system, nor do I care. I want to be able to disconnect and listen to Bowie, Miles Davis, Florence and the Machine and The Hu when I want to relax. I can stream whatever I don't own, and I don't need to get a new shelving system to hold a bunch of CDs or tapes for bands I may only listen to a few songs from.

Sorry for the novel, I just needed to justify my own thoughts to myself.

Topslakr,
@Topslakr@fosstodon.org avatar

@JohnsNotHere I’d love to hear more! What did you end up with? Pictures?

Topslakr,
@Topslakr@fosstodon.org avatar

@JohnsNotHere This is pretty neat! I come to audio from the ‘pro’ side, not the ‘audiophile’ side and it’s always really interesting for me to see what lives ‘over there’. A dedicated box for streaming? Who knew! That’s awesome. I hope it gives you many hours of relaxation and pleasure!

Thanks for taking the time to write it up!

Topslakr,
@Topslakr@fosstodon.org avatar

@JohnsNotHere Sounds to me like you ARE an audiophile, a lover of AUDIO.

The term gets used a lot, but I think it’s mostly used by people who love buying audio equipment 😂
