A sunny day in New Mexico. The shutters closed against the heat. The chillies drying on the porch.

It all sounds good to me...

This sycamore tree is nearly 340 years old. It lives in the village of Tolpuddle, and is the biggest sycamore tree in Dorset.
Underneath this very tree, in 1833, six agricultural labourers met to discuss the poor wages and conditions imposed by their employers. They were later tried under the Incitement to Mutiny Act, and transported to Australia for seven years.
These were the famous Tolpuddle Martyrs - and this is the Martyrs' Tree.

Here is an old boat for - although perhaps these should be more accurately described as portholes than windows.

Nobody home, I'm guessing...

Just up the road from us is a deer park. The Medieval stone walls have been restored, and a herd of fallow deer have been released into it.
These deer are non-native in the UK, but are considered 'naturalised'. They were first introduced by the Romans, but died out, and were then re-introduced in the C11th.
I feel ambivalent about deer - I don't like ticks, and I dont like all the tree damage they cause. They are rather beautiful creatures though...

"The most widespread and abundant species in Britain and northwest Europe is Ixodes ricinus, sometimes known as the sheep tick, deer tick or castor bean tick. It is one of 11 UK species known to bite people and the main transmitter, or vector, of bacteria that cause Lyme disease here... This species needs humidity to thrive. It is typically found in rough grassland, moorland and woodland areas among plants with a moisture-retaining ground layer, such as long grass and bracken." 😱

The trees of Dartmoor are stunted, gnarly, and tough as old boots. They have to be that way to survive. They are also nearly all hawthorns...

Here is a complex piece of shuttering for #FensterFreitag. I came across it on a warm day in Barcelona, as I recall.

I cycled to see this monument last week. It marks the place on Burgh Marsh, by the Solway Firth, where Edward I died (age 68) on the 7th July, 1307 after developing dysentery. The sandstone monument was originally built in 1685, and rebuilt in 1803 following a collapse. It was restored again in 1876. When he died, Edward was on his way north to fight with Robert the Bruce, yet again.

It's a gloomy old spot to die in - wider view in reply.

I visited a cottage last week which had this prospect just across the road from its front door.
This seems to be one hell of a tough, old oak - not only has it lost most of its crown, but it is growing on top of a rock.
You just cannot keep a good tree down.

It's Friday, so it must be time for a window pic.
I spent one day, earlier this week, trying to turn this very rough wall into a 'silk purse'. We'll only know how well I did after the paint goes on.
It was nice looking out of the window though...

I went for a bike ride on Monday, along the Solway Firth, to visit the beginning of Hadrian's Wall. I didn't reckon on the spring tides though, and got marooned in Port Carlisle for over an hour while I waited for high tide to recede. The tides move at an astonishing rate along this coast.

Not all trees are happy, thriving trees. This one looks like it had a pretty good innings though, and seems to have been dead long before it hit the ground.

It's #FensterFreitag, so here is a characterful window.
It looks like it hasn't been well-loved in recent years, but those plants are taking the business of being wallflowers pretty literally.

"Someone who went to university with Kwarteng told me of the night he slept on their student house sofa after a party, vomited on it, then simply got up and left in the morning without cleaning it up. In many ways the country now lives on that sofa."

I've been seeing daffodils in bloom since the beginning of the week. This one was just opening up. It's unusual, where I live, to see daffodils quite this early in the year.
It should gladden my heart to be able to welcome the spring, but they're just making me feel uneasy about climate change...

What a fascinating conversation. Ironically, I've just come in from our community orchard wassail/imbolc event. I don't think it's so much a case of nature striving for balance as of nature being part of a dynamic system. All systems tend towards balance - that is in the nature of systems - but there are many possible points of balance, and the world as we have known it is but one of these points. Unbalance the system far enough, and it will cascade into a new modality.

Everywhere I go this week, the snowdrops are out. They are always a welcome sight. They aren't so much a sign that winter is ending as that spring is beginning to stir...

I endorse this graphic.
Edit: I have to say the response to this post has been eye-opening (in an excellent way) and hilarioius. Special shout out to the lady from Texas - welcome!
