Rishi Sunak 'to block councils imposing new 20mph speed limit zones'

The PM is reportedly set to announce the measure at the Tory Party conference after pledging to tackle "anti-motorist policies" in the wake of the Uxbridge and South Ruislip by-election, which saw a backlash against the expansion of the Ultra Low Emission Zone (#ULEZ).

Greenpeace: Great news! The UK Government has just signed the UN #OceanTreaty in New York. This is a big step towards protecting 30% of the world's oceans by 2030.

But there’s still more to do. The government must make it legally binding by passing it through parliament. Call on them to show leadership and pass the Treaty into law now.

Stunning set of charts showing why this year is breaking multiple temperature records:

Visualizing a summer of extremes in 7 charts
The past four months of 2023 have shattered all prior records by a truly staggering margin

Global surface temperatures have dramatically spiked since the start of June, with the past four months (June-September) breaking prior monthly records by a large margin.

This extreme global heat has made it virtually certain that 2023 will rank as the warmest year on record, and means that there is a chance it will emerge as the first year exceeding 1.5C above preindustrial levels – at least in some datasets.

🚨 BREAKING: The UK government has confirmed it is rowing back on its plans to scan private messages.

They've finally back down with an announcement that Ofcom won't use powers in the spy clause contained in the Online Safety Bill until it's 'technically feasible' to do so.

They've conceded that no current technology exists that would protect privacy or avoid breaking encryption.

Facing prison for holding a placard

Retired social worker Trudi Warner, who faces a possible two years in prison, is asking the Solicitor General to stop proceedings against her for contempt of court. Her alleged crime? Holding a placard.

In March, Warner was standing outside a court in London, where climate protesters were on trial, and held up a sign reading: “Jurors: you have an absolute right to acquit a defendant according to your conscience.”

This legal right was established in 1670, after a judge imprisoned a jury for reaching a verdict he would not accept. The incident gave rise to a new ruling that juries have the freedom to reach decisions independently. Yet holding this sign was enough to put Warner in front of a judge at the Old Bailey – a building with a plaque at the entrance that declares the same legal right.

Too many people, even here on Mastodon, seem to be in denial about how bad things are likely to get on our current path. I suppose I can understand how they might wish the situation was different, and perhaps some of them aren't psychologically or emotionally ready to handle an honest look at the dire future we face, so they simply avoid it.

But I worry that almost everyone will be unprepared for the collapse of our fragile modern society when it comes.

#ClimateChange Committee says UK no longer a world leader

Government backing for new oil and coal, airport expansion plans and slow progress on #HeatPumps show that the UK has lost its leadership on #climate issues, a government watchdog warns.

The Climate Change Committee (CCC) described government efforts to scale up #ClimateAction as "worryingly slow".

It was "markedly" less confident than a year ago that the UK would reach its targets for cutting #carbon #emissions.

Some ‘renewable’ UK incinerators are more polluting than coal stations

'’ incinerator firms are burying evidence that burning for energy can be more polluting than coal-fired power plants, openDemocracy can reveal.

Waste companies promote as generators of ‘renewable’ or ‘low-carbon’ energy but evidence from their own monitors shows that the UK’s 57 incinerators emitted more than seven million tonnes of fossil-based last year, largely from burning

More than half of incinerated is either “readily recyclable” or “potentially recyclable”, according to analysis of waste.

Climate Crisis Is on Track to Push One-Third of Humanity Out of Its Most Livable Environment

As conditions that best support life shift toward the poles, more than 600 million people are already living outside of a crucial “#climate niche,” facing more extreme heat, rising #FoodScarcity and higher death rates.

By late this century, according to a study published last month in the journal Nature Sustainability, 3 to 6 billion people, or between a third and a half of humanity, could be trapped outside of that zone, facing #ExtremeHeat, food scarcity and higher death rates, unless emissions are sharply curtailed or mass #migration is accommodated.

Private jet flights are sky-high and reaching records. While many of us struggle with putting food on the table and paying our bills, the global fleet of private jets has more than doubled in the last two decades.

Private jets and other luxury emissions are not currently regulated as such and largely excluded from key legislation that is supposed to tackle .

The scandal doesn’t stop at private jets: business flights, frequent flyer programmes, and other “bullshit flights” are also the problem. Only 1% of people are responsible for half of all from flying.

When you write hashtags that contain multiple words, make the first letter of each word a capital letter, for example #DogsOfMastodon. This will make the tag readable to blind people.

Blind people use the internet through screen reader apps, which read text out aloud. By putting a capital at the start of each word in a hashtag, you are telling the screen reader how to say the tag correctly.

In the non-techy world this is generally known as "CamelCase".

(Techy people may call it PascalCase)

RichardAshwell,

@feditips

To be technically correct there is lowerCamelCase and UpperCamelCase

If you say 'camel case', it can mean either.

The #ClimateCrisis and #Biodiversity crisis can't be approached as two separate things

New review study released in the journal Science offers new solutions for combating #ClimateChange and #BiodiversityLoss

Anthropogenic #climate change has, together with the intensive use and destruction of natural #ecosystems through #agriculture, #fishing and industry, sparked an unprecedented loss of biodiversity that continues to worsen. In this regard, the climate crisis and biodiversity crisis are often viewed as two separate catastrophes. An international team of researchers calls for adopting a new perspective.
