More than a million people die on roads every year. Meet the man determined to prevent them
Almost 30 years ago, a revolutionary idea changed the way #Europe regarded road collisions. It has probably saved countless lives but it's yet to be fully accepted by politicians.
Scientists tracked a young #whale's journey before he vanished. What they learned could help save his species.
#Bishop’s story, from birth to presumed death, shows the extreme danger facing right #whales, which could be extinct in 3 decades if they continue to disappear at the present rate. Bishop’s species is not doomed to #extinction …but time is running out.
For much of his migration, #Bishop swam through waters where the lack of #SpeedLimits makes #vessel strikes more likely.
In 2022, the #Biden admin proposed expanding that area & applying speed limits to smaller #vessels….
The proposed expanded boundaries have been embraced by scientists & advocates, who say it could help save #NorthAtlantic#RightWhales from #extinction. But NOAA Fisheries, the agency behind the proposal, has yet to finalize the rule, which is still being reviewed by the WH.
If you want people to choose walking, biking, and public transit over the car, you need to make the streets safer.
"Higher speeds are especially dangerous for people outside cars. According to the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, a pedestrian struck by a vehicle traveling at 23 miles per hour faces a 10% risk of death. At 46 miles per hour, this rises to 90%."
This is why cities are lowering their #SpeedLimits.
Remember, when it comes to the actual likelihood that a vehicle crash will occur at all, AND whether the consequences of a crash are serious, or even deadly, or not, speed is ALWAYS a factor. Including when the legal speed limits are currently too high. #SpeedKills#VisionZero
But maybe that's because we don't allow cyclists on highways and have actual driving schools and mandatory driving exercises as well as exams??
Ecen tho that means a driving license for a car (Class B) costs like €2k minimum and if one wants to drive a extended bus (Class DE) one is likely on the hook for €10k on top of the car driving license...
The PM is reportedly set to announce the measure at the Tory Party conference after pledging to tackle "anti-motorist policies" in the wake of the Uxbridge and South Ruislip by-election, which saw a backlash against the expansion of the Ultra Low Emission Zone (#ULEZ).
Really good news. 20mph speed limits across Wales will replace most 30mph limits making Wales a safer country, reducing pollution and reducing road accidents. Interesting that none of the key factors here is to reduce pressure on the NHS.
"While crash frequency and severity did correlate with higher speeds, the most statistically reliable trends that emerged had nothing to do with property damage or personal injury. It was enforcement outcomes that were most demonstratively impacted. In other words, when speed limits go up, fewer people get tickets; when they go down, the opposite happens."
