After reading the wonderful “Creatures That Don’t Conform,” by Lucy Jones in @emergencemagazine - I see that those incredible slime mold images by Barry Webb have definitely done the rounds, but they are too #magical not to revisit, again and again.

Dwell magazine's Alana Hope Levinson has written a thoughtful feature on the joy of "puttering" — relaxing by carrying out low-stakes household chores — and you can read it here. But we got distracted by the language used in the article, since, she claims, "puttering" can also be referred to as "piddling," and where we come from, you certainly don't go piddling around the house. What word do you use for the pastime of puttering?

@CultureDesk I've never heard 'puttering' before, and I think pottering comes from time spent aimlessly in the potting shed. No idea where pootle derives from, just was the term I heard in the UK growing up. But pootling is why Pootle is called Pootle in Flumps, because they just spend their time gently exploring things, no haste, no urgency.

@ai6yr @Lazarou @barkflight yep, this sign would fill me with dread. You got to know the routes to avoid unless you were in a landrover. I also remember my dad ‘teaching’ me how to drive through - hilarious in retrospect, and ridiculous with the new climate.

@ai6yr @BakerRL75 there’s a great bit in the book Feral by George Monbiot (at least that’s where i think i read it - but memory is sketchy ) - about how humans are preconditioned to see big cats, as an evolutionary ‘erring on the side of caution’.
Hence all the big cats loose roaming the uk that tend to always just be cats.
