📢 New from me!

On why "privacy for me but not for thee" amounts to "privacy for no one," and how a German Military comms leak demonstrates that mass private comms services, like Signal, are the only way to ensure privacy--for anyone and everyone.👇

One of the sustaining pleasures of my life right now is watching @sarahbmyers, @ambaonadventure, and @AINowInstitute grow, and grow, their lead in providing sharp, fearless, and genuinely expert analysis of AI and the industry responsible. Nonpareil!

And now, more! ❤️👇

There's no such thing as an AI startup, just guys with models competing to be absorbed by one of the three actual AI companies 😇

This Google report is really perplexing. It purports to document cyberattacks post 10/7. But it only covers those against US/Israel. No mention of attacks against Palestine. Even as US/Israel has extremely sophisticated capabilities.

It also doesn't acknowledge let alone justify this narrow focus in the text. No methods section, no reflexivity. It's a very odd document.

Traut Euch! 😄

P.S. Denkt dran, Euren Signal-Nutzernamen mitzuteilen.

Hey @signalapp - is there an easy way to reach technical support? When the desktop app updated yesterday a very important / irreplaceable conversation was deleted and I'd like to recover it.

This's me!

About 2yrs post-COVID I still get an instant headache from a tiny amount of alcohol. A full drink makes me violently ill for ~3 days. Posting b/c this's the first media I've seen on this symptom, and it would've been helpful to me 2 yrs ago.

@Viss I actually like it! I just order soda water and I was never a big drinker, so it's not a problem for me beyond usually leaving earlier than I would otherwise.

This is both terrifying and deeply, deeply stupid.

This isn't just about TikTok. The bill gives USG the power to ban any old foreign-owned media/tech they designate as adversarial.

This, at a time when we're facing a second Trump term, when we're already seeing alarming censorship & limits on expression (book banning, LGBTQ resources, etc.) at the state level, where a McCarthy-era environment is in effect for pro-Palestinian speech...

Mer__edith,
@Mer__edith@mastodon.world avatar

If this were about privacy & security, then they'd be targeting Facebook, Instagram, etc as well. But they're not. This's about control & I'm not ok with ANY government exercising such control, particularly (as the US here) over the 'rest of world' via US-homed Big Tech platforms

@case2tv Signal uses Signal for almost everything.

@trumpgpt Congratulations! This bot is EXCRUCIATING!

Mer__edith,
@Mer__edith@mastodon.world avatar

@case2tv Less that and more we just don't put anything important in email.

Also, the issue with email as an interoperable standard is that even if we switched, our interlocutors likely didn't. Or, some large % of @proton emails are stored in Google servers anyway due to one party being Gmail.

Mer__edith,
@Mer__edith@mastodon.world avatar

@lathamgreen they already have one. And Oracle handles their data in the US.

What?

Govs hire consultants daily to write whatever. Often, they produce trash. Here, a v small consultancy wrote a report for USG amplifying discredited X-risk ideologies + prescribing bad policy. AFAICT it's based based on ~5 ppl's hunches?

Why're we taking this seriously?

Ramadan Mubarak to all who celebrate!

A blessing felt with particular tenderness right now, as those in Gaza face this holiday amid enforced starvation & collective heartbreak, while others elsewhere commence celebration in a climate of intensifying islamophobia.

I love how "you can't criticize Mistral for hollowing out the #AIAct while selling itself to Microsoft at the same time because without Hyperscaler infrastructure #AI doesn't work" is a thing people say now.

Like use your imagination to go beyond "in the future you can choose which digital fiefdom controls your life". This might sound like "being rational" or "pragmatic" or "innovative" but it's really just boot licking.

Mer__edith,
@Mer__edith@mastodon.world avatar

@tante It's wild to watch this tangled mess of a non-argument emerge from the smoldering wreckage of the argument that Mistral could, if left unshackled by the act, compete with MS et al

@Mer__edith , présidente de @signalapp sur le détournement de chercheur·e·s universitaires, ainsi que de fonds publics, vers les #BigTech qui contrôlent le développement de l'intelligence artificielle. Je me demande si c'est universel comme risque.

Mer__edith,
@Mer__edith@mastodon.world avatar

@mimoqc @signalapp It is universal, and even more acute in some ways, outside of the US. The large AI (Big Tech) companies are primarily based in the US (with China as an encumbered runner up). Which means non-US researchers/governments are left dependent on foreign companies to participate in "AI" whether it be research, startups, gov procurement, etc.

Mer__edith, to random
@Mer__edith@mastodon.world avatar

Notable that this longstanding problem, which I and a few others have been naming for ~a decade, is now common sense.

It's true. AI is fundamentally a technology controlled by Big Tech. But the current 'solutions' to this problem would extend, not dilute, Big Tech control. 1/

Mer__edith,
@Mer__edith@mastodon.world avatar

@EllieK I have very strong disagreements with their analysis (tldr they leave the claims about tech capabilities made by corporate marketers unquestioned (even amplify them) in a way that ultimately promotes corporate hype, while proposing remedies that largely leave the core logics of these companies/their business models in tact)
