I follow lots of #hashtags and I post about Art, Artists, Art History, History, Archaeology, Architecture, Egyptology Photography & random other stuff

Follower count isn't important

Some of my favourite autumnal artworks are by Lucien Lévy-Dhurmer (1865 - 1953) French artist and leading exponent of symbolism and Art Nouveau. His works include paintings, drawings, ceramics, furniture and interior design. Even his "Wisteria Dining Room" has an autumnal feeling

Seen a few posts on here today about people learning new languages, which reminded me of my lovely old 'First French Book' from 1910 - I still mix up 'Thou wilt have been' and 'Thou wouldst have been' though... 😳😄

Jaq__W,

@MarkMaguire "Not to be confused with the Flight of the Wild Geese."
I wasn't aware of either of those, so thanks for the history lesson. Fascinating.

Jaq__W,

@MarkMaguire 😄
We have some weird stuff on my mother's Irish side of the family, and it's interwoven with so much blarney and secrets that I don't think we'll ever get to the truth! Half the stuff we thought was downright make-believe had a kernel of truth, and the rest was whispered over the back of the hand 😄

Jaq__W,

@MarkMaguire Unless it's ghosts... they'd say "there's no such thing as ghosts, it's impossible" ...apart from the ones they saw on Military Hill, or walked past, so they knew someone had died 🤷🏻😂

Jaq__W,

@MarkMaguire Yes, absolutely this! 😄

I just want to say thank you to everyone who favourites, boosts and comments on my posts. I've had such a crap time recently and I so appreciate you all going out of your way to interact with me in these ways. It is also truly lovely to find people who are as enthusiastic about drystone and flowers/nature as I am.

My experience of mastodon is, thus far, entirely positive. A corner of the internet full of kind, interesting, and interested people.

#Thankyou #Mastodon

Jaq__W,

@kristiedegaris It's been great to see your photos and read your posts - one of the main reasons I use social media is to keep learning. Mastodon is really a great place to come across interesting things, like seeing what you've been creating. I also find it a calm, positive, friendly space.

Jaq__W, to spain

Many people will be unaware that the far-right party in #Spain, Vox, which has been steadily increasing in size and gaining votes over recent years, has an "anti faux feminism" element.

On International Women's Day, they hold a "March for Real Femininity"and campaign against gender equality and laws to protect gender violence.

Vox are vile, and almost won the recent election in Spain.

This whole #kiss incident and the claim that objecting it to is "faux feminism" is a hugely important moment

Jaq__W,

Here's more about it if you want to understand what's really going on and how political this kiss incident is.

"Spanish ultraconservative group launches bus campaign against “feminazis”
The vehicle, which features Hitler’s face, will drive around several Spanish cities until March 8, International Women’s Day"

The letter yogh was used in Older Scots, representing 'y'. It looked like this Ȝ ȝ, so when printing took off, printers often used 'z' when yogh was not available in their fonts.

A famous example is the name 'Menzies' which is pronounced like 'Ming-is'. Based on that, please enjoy 2 different ways to read this rhyme.

'There once was a lassie named Menzies,
Who askit her aunt whit this thenzies.
Said her aunt wi a gasp,
"Dear Me, it's a wasp",
An you're haudin the end whaur the stenzies!'

Jaq__W,

@kristiedegaris It wasn't so long ago that I learned Menzies is pronounced Ming-is, and wondered why, never expecting to find out!
Great post

My dad's side of the family were Travellers. This is an image of my great (x6) grandfather and his family, and I feel very fortunate to have it. To be able to see the faces of my relatives from so long ago is a rare privilege.

@kristiedegaris What a wonderful photo. It's a great image, and even better when you know it's your own family!

@GrecianGirly That must have been so heavy to wear. I wonder how many passed out on a hot day, as soldiers often do on ceremonial parades now

Ellie Phillips:
"As a TV presenter, I’ve been told to tone down my Scouse accent countless times.
I love my accent, but I hate that I can be discriminated against because of it. That some people truly think being a Scouser means I must be unintelligent or incapable"
When people make fun of the way you speak, right in front of you, it’s difficult not to be affected. It was the first time I realised that the way I spoke was looked down on."

Jaq__W,

@MarkMaguire
Agreed.
The article states Scouse ranks 2nd from bottom in popularity in the UK, but I'm regularly told by people (down South where I live now) that they love the accent.

She's correct in that column though, in that people do look down on someone with a Scouse accent, and I'm so tired of the stereotyping, most of which goes back to the lies after Hillsborough (I'm 64 and have lived through the changes in opinion).
Big change from when everyone loved The Beatles

Influencer Ellie Grey makes unsupported claims about cancer cures https://fullfact.org/health/ellie-grey-cancer-cures-cannabis-thc/ #factcheck

Jaq__W,

@hoaxeye There's definitely a link between the whole Wellness Industry, and right-wing, science-denying conspiracy types. I've been monitoring it for years, and it started with the growth of pseudo pagan "spirituality", at the same time as a rise in New Thought based Christian Scientists. Both of those groups are very anti-science, "anti-elites", very into "manifest" or "pray" yourself better etc. and some people are making fortunes out of "cures" and their own versions of metaphysics. It's grim

Jaq__W, to mastodon

#Mastodon is the only website at the moment that lets me view what I want to view, and then doesn't refresh without me asking, or lose my place, or jump to some random page or setting, or hide what I was halfway through watching, or pretend I've "engaged" with some shite so suggests some other shite I also don't want to see. It doesn't demand I allow trackers and cookies, or subscribe. It lets me read replies without bizarre intrusions.
It's a little oasis that I appreciate every single day.
