Lukewarm take:

When I see general* "security advice" that mentions "do not use public WiFi" or "use a VPN", I am immediately suspicious about all other advice offered.

Yes, a decade ago that was a consideration, because most sites were not using HTTPS. Credentials were flying cleartext on the wire.

Today, almost all sites use HTTPS. Doesn't mean the risk is zero, but it's way lower.

*) "general" meaning "without a very specific threat model in mind", meant for general public, etc.

Also, shout-out to @letsencrypt for dramatically changing the security landscape of the Web for the better over the years.

Rarely is there an example of a project so effective and so directly improving everyone's lives, while at the same time keeping the original engineering mindset and just Doing Stuff Right™ humbly in the background.

Next November it will have been exactly a decade since LE started. We all owe them a huge 10th birthday party.

2024 is a mega election year and the EU elections are taking place this week. This is the 2nd largest election in the world - around 350 million people are eligible to vote.

Just like the elections in India and the USA this year - this one is very important for coexistence on our planet. Therefore, we want to use our reach and call on all those who are entitled to vote to make their voice heard.

We must not leave the EU to the far-right parties and must defend our democracies. Please vote.

Regarding the Microsoft AI spying thing:

Imagine it’s 2004 and we’ve just found out that Nokia (through a super secret network they’ve been building) intends to send all of the audio of all of your phone calls to the Nokia home office for analysis. Now imagine you’re boycotting Nokia for this policy, but still choose to call someone you don’t know has a Nokia phone, so even now your conversation is sent to the home office.

Of course that’s not okay. We would never have thought that was okay.

> Nvidia's Blackwell cluster, which will come with eight GPUs, pulls down 15kW of power. That's 15,000 watts of power. Divided by eight, that's 1,875 watts per GPU.

What? A house consumes 400W/hour most of the time. Blackwell consumes 37.5 times MORE than a house!

Put another way: you can either power Blackwell for 1 hour, or your house for… 1.5 DAY.

Welp, I knew Microsoft's CoPilot+ Recall was going to be a privacy disaster but I didn't expect it to turn into an enterprise computing catastrophe for Microsoft quite this fast!

But this can't be a one-off. Any large enterprise that has to comply with a regulated privacy environment—HIPAA in the USA, GDPR in the EU, banking/insurance/finance globally—must be considering a ban on Microsoft installations on laptop/desktop computers right now or be breaking the law.

Some of y'all are still confused as to why it seems that Silicon Valley billionaires are "turning to Trump." That's because you don't listen to Black people, you disrespect poor white people, and you ignore obvious statistics that have been staring you in the face for decades.

Silicon. Valley. Billionaires. Have. Always. Supported. Trump.

Not because they like the tax breaks. Because they are more likely to be racist, and racism is the greatest predictor of Trump support.

Shout out to all the people just now learning that a US Sheriff, whose job is statistically safer than being a gardener, carpenter, or taxi driver, and that barely graduated high school, and whose job is mainly harassing and beating unarmed Black and Brown people... gets paid between 3X and 6X the salary of an active duty Navy Seal with 2 Masters degrees, on deployment in an active war zone.🙂🙃

6X. Not a typo.

Many of those sheriffs took time off of work to go act out at Jan 6. No SEALs did. 🤷🏿‍♂️

🏗️ @shivammathur has been working on GitHub Actions to automate the builds of these extensions.

➡️ The next step is automating these builds so that extension authors can include steps in their release actions as well!

Please—for the love of devops—when building a web app that you’re going to let people self-host, don’t require (Redis or Memcached or Kafka or whatever), if you already require Postgres.

Postgres can almost certainly handle the load of whatever it is you’re pre-maturely optimizing for in the vast majority of situations. Some of us use these tools to serve 25 users not 25 million.

Adding more pieces of the stack to maintain is a real kick in the face for people who just want to use your thing.

Latest version of #HTML standard includes a warning that advises against using the #XML syntax (formerly known as #XHTML), stating that it's "essentially unmaintained"🧐 :

https://html.spec.whatwg.org/multipage/xhtml.html

Looks like a recent change, as there's no mention of this in the April 3 version of the spec:

https://web.archive.org/web/20240403210532/https://html.spec.whatwg.org/multipage/xhtml.html

Unless I'm misreading it, this seems like a big deal? E.g. XML syntax is mandatory in #EPUB 3 documents:

https://www.w3.org/TR/epub-33/#dfn-xhtml-content-document
