Reflecting on the firefish/calckey "moment"

which was about a year ago now, I can't help but suspect it was a small event with wider implications on the dominance of in the

I think it was the last chance to direct the twitter migration energy into discovering new/different fedi platforms.

And it was blown, with alt-social in a weird steady/waiting state that's smaller I suspect, than what many hoped for.

@maegul The cost to migrate to calckey was minimal b/c it federated. I moved my follower list & arrived with enthusiasm! No walls! Refreshing!

I liked the "calckey" approach to aggregating content w/ emojis. But there were times when I couldn't post or get new messages for days, which stretched to weeks at a time!

Just wait, devs were working on it. DB issues, etc. By the time it rebranded to firefish it was down so frequently I gave up and ended up happily on a stable Mastodon server.

A cultural difference between USA & Korea: Koreans will brush their teeth in public restrooms.

Yeah, next to the urinal, at the sink, Koreans just brushing away tooth decay. It took time for me to accept that reality, but now that's fine. It's not my hill to die on.

However, forgetful or very strange people that KEEP their toothbrushes in public restrooms and leave them? Admittedly rare, but may I say, hell no! Absolutely not! Toss that brush straight in the garbage. Ew.

The -> People list on my current instance has recommended the same accounts for the past 1.5 years without rotation even when they've stopped posting on the account.

If I haven't followed them by now, and they don't post...why does this list exist?

Finding new accounts with hashtags is very easy and rewarding, but the admin account discovery tools built into the servers are stagnant.

It occurs to me that, instead of setting a goal of books read in a year, you should be able to set a reading time goal. Harder to track unless you read with an app, but it would be nice if my Kobo could track that.

I say this because I do find myself choosing shorter books in order to help me hit my lofty goal of 42. I could set a lower goal and get stuck into some chunkier stories, but then I wouldnโ€™t be aiming for a fun meme.

@DJDarren
As long as you are reading and enjoying yourself, don't worry about the number you set for yourself. Reading doesn't need to serve productivity. No one is expecting book reports or checking yoir total to judge you.

It truly doesn't matter. Set an aspirational goal, but just enjoy what your are reading. If you aren't enjoying a book, you have no obligation to finish it either.

Our scary movie of the week with the kids was Terminator 2. It has a lot of swearing, but it was worth it to share. The origins of so many cultural & generational references and action tropes are embedded. I had to share the experience.

I explained was a pioneer in CGI, but the phenomenal chases were practical stunts. They thought it was a fun movir, but they struggled with how causality loops work.

Son: Arnold on the bike was "pretty cool".

Question for those who have read them: is the whole *The Expanse* series good?

Iโ€™ve read the first two books and enjoyed them both. I enjoyed the TV series. But I see there are nine novels and eight novellas in the series, and I know the book series goes on longer than the TV series. Iโ€™m curious: is the quality fairly consistent or, like a lot of longer book series, does it degrade over time?...

GeekinKorea,
@GeekinKorea@dice.camp avatar

@DaMonsterKnees @AFKBRBChocolate They didn't do the last three books at all really. That particular set of book events was beginning to be set up, but involves a significant time jump. If The Expanse returned as a series later, it could be done with the original cast, but seems highly unlikely now.

Highly worth the effort. What they managed to finish was done well enough.

Batman (1989) has been widely re-released in Korean theaters this weekend. It's a chilly snowy day, and we cancelled travel plans for the weekend, but watching a Tim Burton Batman movie with my kids might be a fun time.

Batman Returns is the Christmas movie of the franchise though.

GeekinKorea,

@Tim_Eagon Korean cinemas often re-release movies here when the Korean domestic market can't fill theaters. Mad Max: Fury Road (2015) and Dune (2021) get re-released often actually.

It may be an artifact of the old quota system. 20 years back, local Korean movies had a mandatory % of screens show Korean films half the year minimum to foster K-cinema & prevent Hollywood smothering competition. It was a K-studio accounting hack eliminated after Kor-US FTA.

@trixter What else is on the list?

GeekinKorea,
@GeekinKorea@dice.camp avatar

@trixter I am curating a list for my daughter because she is interested in horror movies, so I've been catching her up on movies foundational to the genre I grew up on within the bounds of "Don't make it awkward to watch with a parent".

We watched The Thing two weeks ago. She liked it and watched attentively.

If you want more body horror like The Thing, "Society" was the grossest, most over the top body horror I've seen recently.

GeekinKorea,
@GeekinKorea@dice.camp avatar

@trixter I also need to revisit The Fly on my own. I haven't seen it in a VERY long time, and I remember it being unsettling.

My daughter LOVED Alien & Aliens. She loves to watch strong lead characters who aren't morons in horror.

She doesn't have patience for people being killed by being morons. I think Terminator 2 would suit her well, but there is a LOT of swearing and violence.

Watched Aliens (1986) as per my daughter's request to follow up after Alien last week for our scary movie night. My daughter liked the movie, and hated Burke as much as he deserved.

The reveal of Ripley in the loader near the end had my daughter in awe. "She's SO cool!"

I never realized the amount of intense swearing in this movie until my daughter was in the room. Oops! Watching these movies with her is something that I look forward to all week.

My son was born at 1:30 a.m. on November 5.

We set the clocks back last night at 2:00 a.m.

That means we went through the hour of 1:00 a.m. - 2:00 a.m. twice.

That means we had his exact birth time twice today.

So he has a double birthday today, right?

GeekinKorea,
@GeekinKorea@dice.camp avatar

@Teri_Kanefield Tell him happy birthday.
My son was born 7 minutes into the new year, if he had born in the prior year he would have been 2 years old when the year changed because of how the Korean age system used to work.

Everyone in Korea used to get one year older at the same time regardless of their birthday. If it is confusing, I agree, but traditions die hard. The traditional Korean age system was ended in use by the Government only this year to standardize International ages.

Monster of the Week, Week 3: My players freed an unfortunely trapped cryptid.

In the process, they have intentionally murdered three people they've encountered who were doing something horrible, but didn't deserve being shot or being boiled in a maple syrup vat.

To save their own skin they now have endangered their coworkers and engaged in a conspiracy. They kidnapped the local mob boss' fail son who was a witness.

My PLAYERS are clearly the Monsters.

They keep making logical choices considering the situation I put them in, but haven't faced rolls where I was able to escalate the Doom Track sufficiently yet.

I'll need to put them in a really bad spot next week so I can get higher stakes. They are making enemies everywhere, but having a lot of fun.

They haven't killed anyone innocent...yet.

Monster of the Week tip: You can't script out a game of #pbta in advance, but you can keep consequences for their choices prepared.

As a warm up to the session, write a list to stack tension as they fail rolls. Not everything has to derive from the choices immediately proceeding the failed roll either. Bring back things from previous sessions. Notetaking really helps keep these consequences at hand for later.
