Since we're talking #NBA right now, how do you feel about your team's special home court design for the In Season Tournament?

#DubNation I'm not feeling the "wine cork" brown color here. The lightning yellow stripe and the trophy look ok though. Some teams have some floor designs that look cool. OKC for example.

Do you like your team's design?

I was unaware Daryl Hall did this kind of power pop / post-punk music. Is all of his solo stuff like this? Digging this track rn. 🎸 🤩

Us3 - "Cruising" (1993)

The debut album from British jazz-rap group Us3 really holds up.

Its mixture of jazz and hip-hop, with material from popular jazz musicians of the 20th century being reimagined, is such a cool concept. And all the samples are from old Blue Note Records classics.

When did “the 80’s” start? 🤔

I like this answer from Reddit 👇

"I see five distinct parts:

80 - 81: Fast Times at Ridgemont High era, rock was popular, New Wave just showing up. J Geils Band, Asia, Billy Squier.

82 - 83: New Romantics era, New Wave becomes more widely accepted. Culture Club, Spandau Ballet, Missing Persons.

84 - 85: Monsters of Pop era. Bruce Springsteen, Prince, Michael Jackson, Madonna, Cindy Lauper.

86 - 87: Stock Aitken Waterman era, where pop became a bit overproduced. Bananarama, Pet Shop Boys, Cutting Crew.

88 - 89: Hair Band era, where pop was taken over by teased hair and electric guitars. Poison, Def Leppard, Guns N Roses.

(Of course, the R&B charts had their own eras, and had very successful crossovers in every era, from Lionel Richie to Janet Jackson.)"

I'm still amused at how polarized we are on the subject of self-checkout. I LOVE it.

Here's today's hysterical opinion-presented-as-fact article on the topic.

Really weird claims at the start.

You still have to wait in line: Extremely rare and any line moves fast anyway.

The checkout kiosks bleat and flash when you fail to set a purchase down in the right spot.
WHAT?!! I've never had this happen anywhere.

Scanning items is sometimes a crapshoot: It's the same scanner the checkout clerk uses!! Is this author ok? 🤦‍♂️

I stay up late just to watch Inside The NBA guys goof around and talk about the games. Bummed next season is likely their last 😔

Also hate the idea of having to watch games on Prime Video (no pause or rewind, no idea how to record, not all games immediately posted when finished, etc.)

Interesting article on a new book that analyzes the large demonstrations in world capitals throughout the 2010's, noting that many of these countries ended up with leaders even more repressive than the autocrats that protests toppled.

Interesting quote:

"The reason that social media did not work as promised is not because we misunderstood the nature of the internet and the possibilities of digital connectivity, but because oligarchs took over the digital space."

Scottish rockers Teenage Fanclub release their 3rd album, “Bandwagonesque”

This was my intro to the band. Nothing but love for the wall of guitar sound and vocal harmonies.

It’s a beautiful record from start to finish. I have a lot of fond memories associated with this album. I

Sonic Youth released the EP “Master-Dik”

This is a strange album. It feels self indulgent, hastily produced and lazy. A lot of caterwauling and carrying on. The KISS sample in the title track was cool to hear though.

For me, the only track I liked was their cover of “Beat On The Brat ''.

It’s really well done and was a welcome change from SY’s traditional sound.

Ministry released their fourth album, “The Mind Is a Terrible Thing to Taste”

Another move towards the industrial metal sound they’d become known for, this time with lots of guitars. In the 80s, they were a new wave synth pop band.

Their previous record, 1988’s “The Land of Rape And Honey” introduced a much more aggressive metal sound, though with more sampling and less guitar.

They toured a lot in support of this album, and iirc, the industrial metal sound was ascendent at this time (e.g. Pretty Hate Machine came out a month prior and was building a fan base).

Metallica release their 4th album, “And Justice For All”

Pretty much their last true hard thrash-metal album. Perhaps their best album to date. ??

I was just starting college and Metallica was getting popular, approaching mainstream status with the release of this album.

My older brother had all their records, starting with 1983’s “Kill ‘Em All”, so I was long familiar with Metallica. I loved most of their previous album, “Master of Puppets”, so was eager to hear this one.

What I recall noticing was an improved sound quality. And of course some great guitar work.

Favorite track is probably “Shortest Straw” 👇

Butthole Surfers release their third EP, “Widowermaker”

This is an interesting bridge in the band’s discography, as they move to a more accessible sound.

This EP is the release just before what I think of as their best album, Pioughed. Sounds similar, but less structured, more chaotic.

And it’s a particularly rare vinyl disc. Depending on the release, sometimes Helicopter is on the A side, sometimes the B side.

The state of U.S. made EVs remains underwhelming and now looks to remain so for many more years to come. US automakers remain hooked on high margin trucks, and EVs are too often large SUV types or extremely short in range.

I don't want to promote the horrible labor practices that, in part, make Chinese EVs so much more affordable, but tariffs and bans don't seem like the best way forward.

One of the most memorable shows from my high school days.

Great venue (now it’s upscale housing), good friend group, and the weather was amazing.

We were all psyched to see X, and kinda meh on Social D (at that point they’d really gone mainstream).

What I was not expecting upon entering the arena was seeing some skinny, hyperactive dude on stage swinging his head around over and over again, violently whipping his long hair all over the place and belting out tunes with passion and energy. It was a real meth head vibe.

And since this was a month before their debut self-titled album was released, I was unfamiliar with Perry Ferrell or Jane’s Addiction. 🤯

Bauhaus released their first single, “Bela Lugosi’s Dead” ⚰️

What an amazing first release. Absolutely foundational to the “goth” genre of music. It was the first thing the band recorded together, only six weeks after the band had formed. And it was recorded in a single take too 🤯

I can’t recall where I first heard this, probably in junior high around ‘83, there were a few cool goths in my school, but I do recall being psyched for a song about one of my favorite “monster movie” actors. And Peter Murphy’s voice is unforgettable.

This is now a staple of any good Halloween mix 🎃
