This is a red alert. We all need to be aware of what's happening and be ready to fight.

I did not realize how easy it was to collectively fight medical debt. Just learned about this initiative in Philly that raised over $17.000 and erased 1.6 MILLION in medical debt for the community. Let's do this in our own communities!

A group of Philadelphians erased $1.6 million in local medical debt. They celebrated with an unofficial debt burning.

BatsInLavender,

@jake4480 I'm so sorry. I have a few friends in Florida and I worry about them and their kids. It's shameful and horrific, and I wonder how long it will be allowed to go on. We're now seeing it spread to other states like Arkansas, Oklahoma, and it's been ongoing in Texas for years.

I'm sure it's part of a plan... An uneducated populace is easy to control, after all.

Florida peeps, please stay safe from hurricane Idalia and your government. Sending strength.

Another album anniversary - Definitely Maybe by Oasis is 29 years old. 🤯

I saw them at St. Andrews Hall on this tour. Paid $8. Liam was drunk and sat on the drum riser the whole night and fought with Noel. They didn't end up throwing any punches though. I still want my $8 back. One of the loudest shows I've ever been to (besides the Jesus Lizard).

Still a great album opener: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k3su23NmBmo

Nothing's Shocking, the first album by Jane's Addiction, is 35 years old. I saw the video for "Mountain Song" on 120 Minutes and bought the album on cassette the next day.

Between this album and Pretty Hate Machine by Nine Inch Nails (1989) I wore both cassettes out. I listened to Nothing's Shocking pretty much every day until Pretty Hate Machine came out, and then I listened to that one everyday. Side note: I spent my 39th birthday in 8th row at the NINJA tour featuring both bands after seeing them at the first Lollapalooza in 1991.

  1. I feel old. 2) I feel like both albums hold up.

Happy 35th Nothing's Shocking. You're still brilliant.

Have some "Mountain Song" - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1kAIMlISHhU

BatsInLavender,

@jake4480 NIN is my favorite band ever. I've seen them 18 times. First time was opening for Peter Murphy on the tour for Deep. Pretty Hate Machine had just come out a few months before and I went and bought it the next day. One of the best live acts ever.

BatsInLavender,

@jake4480 No, I need to check it out!

BatsInLavender,

@jake4480 I didn't either. I've been so absorbed in everything else in my life I completely missed it.

BatsInLavender,

@jake4480
OMG YES! Less Than is one of my recent favorites. It is one of the best songs he's ever written. Every time it comes on I need to play it a few more times.

BatsInLavender,

@jake4480
I've had this really intense desire to tattoo the words "welcome oblivion" on the inside of my left forearm in script. Probably will never do it, but I kinda want to. I should get a NIN tattoo. I have a Bowie one and one related to New Model Army. Only seems right...

BatsInLavender,

@jake4480
I just wishlisted it on Bandcamp. I'll listen tomorrow.

BatsInLavender,

@jake4480
I also have Godzilla, a colony of bats in flight, and a lotus. Definitely planning a cat tattoo and wanting to add Mothra to go with Godzilla on my planned Kaiju leg. It's a work in progress. I feel like my "welcome oblivion" is going to join your Butthole Surfers one. An idea that is nixed at this point.

BatsInLavender,

@jake4480
Seriously. Gary is great live if you haven't seen him. Still a great live performer.

Depending on your time zone, Voyager 2's closest approach to Neptune was either yesterday (the 24th) or #OTD in 1989. It took place around 4am UTC.

Here's a short thread with some great images captured by the probe, and some proposed cargo for a future mission. #ReturnToNeptune

(Definitely read this one to the end.)

A color photo of Neptune’s moon Triton, captured by Voyager 2. It is pinkish-tan in color, with shadows from mountainous terrain near the bottom of the disk and a white spray of lighter material across the equator.

BatsInLavender,

@mcnees
That is totally adorable.

I grew up in an area in Michigan very prone to tornadoes. One thing my mother taught me was to always put my shoes on for days like this. Not flip flops, but actual closed shoes.

If the worst happens and the building you're in is hit by a tornado you need to be able to climb out. Having closed shoes on will protect you and give you the traction needed.

I've been through two tornadoes. One when I was about 7 years old that took out my grandparents' barn, and the other in 1997 - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tornado_outbreak_of_July_1%E2%80%933,_1997. While the structure I was living was spared other than some shingles and a few broken windows, homes on either side were damaged and we were stuck for three days while they cleared debris. They went door to door to check on folks and the Red Cross came and fed us.

I was sitting on my couch when that storm happened, and by the time the sirens went off I had seconds to take cover. Having been through that I now take it a lot more seriously. Be safe, folks.

BatsInLavender,

@jake4480 Yeah, when severe weather hits I am the first in the basement or safe area. It was one of the scariest things I've ever been through and I don't care to repeat it.

I love sandals when appropriate, but days like today in SE Michigan are definitely for closed shoes with good traction. Sitting around in hiking shoes isn't my favorite thing to do, but if something happens at least I know I have good footing.

BatsInLavender,

@jake4480 We get super cold in the Winter (though not Minnesota type cold most of the time) AND super hot and humid (not quite Florida, but it can get that hot). Beautiful state, but the weather can be fierce. I love it here, but it's wild. Weather can change multiple times throughout the day.

I have tried on women's skiing jackets only to discover they have no pockets. NONE.

I have tried on bluejeans only to discover I could not fit a single measly credit card in the "pocket"

Things have improved, but you gotta do extra work to just get a basic level of pocketedness.

Meanwhile over in the men's section...

(Image from front of men's underwear)

BatsInLavender,

@futurebird
I've bought men's jackets and shorts for the pockets. Universal Standard makes jeans with the best pockets! Absolutely huge. Spendy, but they run really good sales a couple of times a year.

Who the heck needs a pocket in their underwear? 🤨

Our Tech Lead @mikethicke just let me know about BookWyrm, a "ad-free, anti-corporate, and federated" reading app.

I love a couple of things about this, but their onboarding process is fantastic. Very curious to know if any of my peeps on here are members, and if you have joined what you thought of it. If you haven't and you're a reader, check it out!
