Fellow antkeepers, how do you manage your home wifi? How do you deal with the sheer volume of connections. My router only allows up to 24 connections at a time, and most of my colonies seem to have their own routers set up-- but the cone ants can't be bothered and I keep getting bumped off the internet.

@michaelgemar @futurebird to be fair, neither had I. But there are so many different protocols I just took a shot and got lucky.

ok bbq Peeps did yall know you can do an entire TURKEY on a weber grill? It is magnificent but takes some tending and ALL DAY but if done right your turkey will taste smoked like ham! It is a method called Indirect cooking. You start with a pile of coals; when they are nice and hot make four small piles on the edges of your #weber adding just a couple of coals to each pile as they burn down. The trick is to keep the heat low and slow, adding some soaked wood chips often for smoke; I also spatter grease on them each time I open it to tend them. This works best with a thermometer you can see from outside so dont open it if the temp is right only if it is cooling and you need to add coals. Sometimes I blow it and have to remove the bird and start over if they have gone out so it is an art but omfreaking god you will never do turkey in your oven again! I even do this in winter but I am a purist. #bbq #turkey #birdsofmastodon #smoke

Took an after school nap and had the most disturbing dream about this guy in Brooklyn who called me to come help out with his cat colony. Only it was a Cat Colony. There were cat majors and cat minors and we had to go in deep to find the cat queen...

This is all 's fault somehow...

@evan I voted too fast with strong agree. We don’t require this type of labeling in any other form of media, why on social media? Can you imagine if a movie had to have an on screen caption for every product placement?

Every so often someone asks a question about chatGPT and literature and I go poke the robot to see if it's any better and it's not, but there's always this distinctive flavor in the prose it produces, even when you ask it to emulate a highly distinctive style.

Suuuuuper heavy on the adjectives, dialogue especially wooden, lots of overtly ~charming touches.

Anyway I finally figured it out, they fed it the internet's entire supply of fanfiction and that's all it can write now.

@kissane This makes a lot of sense. There is going to be a lot more fan fiction online (and other forms of user generated content) than there will be original source material and professionally edited content.

    @GottaLaff oh come on, this is standard practice for any high level elected official from big city mayor on up. They are always staffed so the office can know what was said, who they interacted with, what promises were made, what needs to be followed up, etc. Failure to do that would be malpractice.

    After eventually listening to a few of the fan-made And Justice for All versions where they "put Jason Newstead's bass back in" a number of years ago, I decided that what actually made Justice work is that it's two guitars and a drum kit, and my blasphemous opinion is that they made the right call.

    Yesterday I read an interview with Newstead about it, where he basically "defended" Lars and James for making tough calls, and essentially said that Justice really was two guitars and a drum kit.

    @nyquildotorg After reading your commentary on 72 Seasons I have been listening more intently when it plays on Pandora. Keep in mind I got hooked on Metallica with “and Justice for All” and my perspective is entirely framed around my love of that sound and era. I didn’t realize there were fan made versions and will seek them out.

    @nyquildotorg But right now it feels to me like 72 Seasons is closer to late 80’s Def Leppard than it is to what I know as Metallica, particularly Shadow Follows. That isn’t entirely a knock as Def Leppard, and “Hysteria” in particular, was THE sound for me back then. All that to say, there was something magical about two guitars and a drum kit that hasn’t quite been replicated since then.

    @nyquildotorg I love the bass on the early records before then as well. I would probably rank Ride the Lightning and Kill ‘em All ahead of the black album. So for me either approach works. It just seems the latest album doesn’t have either of those things.

    We were driving on a back road into town when we saw four vultures perched on a fence. I had the "wrong" lens for a great capture, but I love the essence of this one as he took off towards the trees. I think vultures are very cool birds.

    Why does Mastodon’s Notifications always show some number of unseen notifications? I open this window in Safari, it shows a badged “3” on the Notifications, but if I go to it, there are no new notifications, thought the badge disappears. Then close and reopen the window and the “3” is right back there.

    @peternlewis Unfortunately I have no experience with the web UI so I can’t offer an answer, only a guess. The one similar instance where I have seen this behavior is when I had new follower requests when using an iOS app. The notification badge was there on the home screen but within the notifications tab there were no notifications. I had to go to a completely separate tab to see the follower requests. Once I viewed those, the badge cleared.
