The Red Cross asks people who live in and are evacuating the town now to contact 1717 in order to be registered.

You can stop by the main office of the Red Cross at Efstaleiti 9 and register there if that is more convenient.

#Volcanic #eruption - A state of emergency has been declared in southern #Iceland because of another #volcaniceruption on the Reykjanes Peninsula (the fourth since December).

It is thought to be the most powerful flare-up so far. Lava has reached the eastern defences around the evacuated town of #Grindavik, local media said.

People have also been moved from the nearby Blue Lagoon, one of Iceland's most popular tourist attractions.

Major Fluvial Erosion And A 500-Mt Sediment Pulse Triggered By Lava-Dam Failure, Río Coca, Ecuador

photos - Former location of the Cascada San Rafael lava-dam waterfall and knickpoint on the Río Coca, viewed facing upstream. (a) Pre-collapse morphology of the waterfall, in 2012 (image from Ecuador Ministry of Tourism). Accommodation space upstream of the lava dam was filled with sediment. (b) The site was on 2 February 2020, shortly after a sinkhole (upstream of lava dam) captured the river. Dashed line shows the approximate location of the unconformable contact between the lava flow and underlying volcaniclastic avalanche deposits. (c) The site was on 22 February 2021 during the incipient collapse of the remaining arched edifice of the lava flow. (d) Later on 22 February 2021 after full collapse of the lava arch. (e) The site on 25 February 2021, shortly after the river overtopped and eroded through the debris dam. Photographs in (b) through (e) provided by the Corporacion Electrica del Ecuador.
map and chart - (a) Detailed map of the study reach (shown within box in Figure 1a), with river kilometres (rkm) shown referring to distance downstream of the Coca Codo Sinclair (CCS) dam and diversion intake. (b) Subsurface geologic cross-section of the study reached from rkm 0 to 22 (annotated using field observations of the authors and borehole information from INECEL [Instituto Ecuatoriano de Electrificacion], 1992). Dashed line shows the riverbed profile as of 2 December 2022, 1,034 days after the failure of the Cascada San Rafael knickpoint. Prior to the loss of the knickpoint in February 2020, the accommodation space upstream of the Cascada San Rafael had entirely filled with sediment. Geologic units are abbreviated as volcaniclastic breccia (Br), cohesive volcaniclastic avalanche deposits (CoAv), loose volcaniclastic avalanche deposits (LoAv), ancient alluvial deposits (All), lacustrine sediments (Lac), debris-flow deposits (Deb, a thin deposit around rkm 8–8.5). Lava flow, recent alluvial deposits and Mesozoic bedrock are also shown.

"Alarming news from New Zealand scientists suggests the #ozone layer might not be recovering after all.

The research published in Nature Communications suggests the Antarctic ozone layer has reduced by 26% since 2004, contrary to previous reports of recovery by actions taken under an agreement called the Montreal Protocol.

The authors say #wildfire and #volcanic aerosols together with greenhouse gas emissions probably explain recent setbacks with record large, long-lived ozone holes re-emerging over Antarctica during Spring since 2020." #climate https://cosmosmagazine.com/earth/climate/ozone-layer-not-recovering/

Original and 3x AI versions of Rangitoto Island.
Rangitoto is a volcanic island in the Hauraki Gulf near Auckland, New Zealand. The 5.5 km (3.4 mi) wide island is a symmetrical shield volcano cone capped by central scoria cones, reaching a height of 260 m (850 ft).
Rangitoto is the youngest and largest of the approximately 50 volcanoes of the Auckland volcanic field.

US Hwy 395 through the Eastern Sierras is a CA Gold road trip that everyone should do at least once! Every season is gorgeous and my first Fall here has already been breathtaking and magical!

These shots are from Bishop Canyon Creek-South Lake and Wild Willy's hot springs near Mammoth.

I'm looking forward to exploring Mammoth and North to Lee Vining/Mono Lake this week!!!

The wind rustles the yellow leaves from trees overlooking a bright blue Alpine lake (South Lake) in Bishop Creek Canyon. Snow capped Sierras are in the distance.
Natural hot springs located a couple of miles off Hwy 395 dotted with about 10 people soaking in the water. The Eastern Sierras are to the West and the sky is bright blue with fluffy clouds.
A path through the brush leads to the hot springs along the Hwy 395 valley near Mammoth.

Climate change is an immediate threat to the majority of the world's population.

We need a local, regional, state, national, and international "moon shot" type of concentration of effort using available resources while developing and advancing new science and technologies to counteract the damage humans have caused.

Without this type of all-out, universal cooperation, human civilization, and perhaps humanity itself, are in imminent danger of extinction.
