I spotted this young (you can tell by the length of its beak) kingfisher (Alcedo atthis, 🇩🇪 Eisvogel, 🇵🇱 zimorodek) far from the river and its parents, waiting to be fed. Although it can fly, it hasn't learned to hunt yet and is dependent on its parents for food. But the parents already have new chicks, which have priority for feeding. The start of an independent life is hard for birds.
I stopped by today the muddy pool at which I saw a Curlew four days ago, just to see this. White-tailed eagle (Haliaeetus albicilla, 🇩🇪 Seeadler, 🇵🇱 bielik). This must be some exceptional muddy pool. I need to visit it more often.
Bee-eaters (Merops apiaster, 🇩🇪 Bienenfresser, 🇵🇱 żołna) literally feed on bees and other stinging insects, such as wasps or hornets. To avoid being stung, they remove the sting from the insect they catch by smashing it against a tree while holding it in their beak.
This is the second time I've seen a juv. gull of this appearance on camera and I was still puzzled as to which species it belonged to. I'm wavering between the Ring-billed Gull (Larus delawarensis), which would be a rare vagrant here, and the Mew Gull (Larus canus).
Of course, I could be completely wrong.
Anyone from the ornithological bubble who has an idea?
