This means, among other things, that uBlock Origin is about to be disabled in Chrome. Google will choose a different extension to recommend but it can not be as effective as #uBlock Origin.
Following #Google's example, may I instead recommend you switch to #Firefox.
Firefox will continue to support Manifest v2, and consequently uBlock Origin and other extensions that can not be implemented with Manifest v3.
For those whose computers won’t let them use #ublock , please do consider blocking advertisers earlier than inside the browser. Try this hosts file, or better: set these to block on your internet router’s firewall. #adblock#privacy
Those banners are the perfect example of malicious compliance! The data collecting companies did their best to barely comply but in the most annoying way. Just to point out, that it is the GDPRs/EUs fault your internet browsing experience got so much worse!
I highly recommend at least using the content blocker uBlock Origin!
In case anyone else is fed up of seeing the "Code 55% faster with Github Copilot" message on Github, the following filter works a treat with uBlock Origin
"After quizzing these companies about data practices, I learned that most are sharing what’s happening in my home with Amazon, too. Our data is the price of entry for devices that want to integrate with Alexa. Amazon’s not only eavesdropping — it’s tracking everything happening in your home."
#GeoffreyAFowler, 'Alexa has been eavesdropping on you this whole time'
> He is writing for a general audience, for whom correct use of Tor and TAILS are far beyond the level of adaptation.
No. No. If ppl care they'll adapt to anything. Anyway, Tor is designed to be easy to use. In fact, its too dumbed-down. We have to help ppl by instructing how to use NoScript addon in Safest Mode, like basically everyone who has used Tor for years. Also #uBlock.
As we said "for the more tech savvy", TailsOS is a good option". Ie. just say "for the more tech savvy".
That link has a few dot points and its a good page to reference, but for the average person who just wants to open a browser and do some searches #Tails is pretty wonderful, in every way, really.
Even though we're not fans of GNOME desktop and dislike that they dropped I2P, its still good. Flash-a-USB and forget, almost.
What extensions do you use with Firefox for privacy/security? I currently use uBlock Origin, Privacy Badger, and Decentraleyes. Curious if there is something I'm missing or should replace.
@mkiol I also installed #Brave Browser as an additional tool. However, I only use it very rarely. As always, there is some criticism that keeps popping up. Among other things, that the #ublock lists are hand curated. So that certain actors like Facebook get data. I can't confirm or deny this.
There have been claims of problems (data leak, crypto …) in the past: https://news.sophos.com/en-us/2020/06/09/brave-ceo-apologises-for-adding-affiliate-links-to-urls/ which appear to be fixed. I haven't found any good independent analyses of brave.
"... the website loads in a special browser built into the app, rather than your phone’s default browser. In 2022, privacy researcher Felix Krause found that Meta injects special “keylogging” JavaScript onto the website you’re visiting that allows the company to monitor everything you type and tap on, including passwords. Other apps including TikTok do the same thing."
@noellemitchell@mxtthxw for anyone who is reading this, please make sure you're using #Firefox with #uBlock Origin and also if you're up for the learning curve, #LibRedirect, though that's not really helpful if you have to log in.
I would also like to suggest trying to migrate over to #PixelFed as an #Instagram replacement and #Friendica as a #Facebook replacement. It took me years to start using my #Mastodon account, the first step is creating it.
