🧌 We all know the R startup message. It tells us the version of R we are running, the date, the platform we are running on, and some informative tips on using R. When you've been using R a while, though, it get old. Let me show you how you can customise your startup message! ---
Hi, we're a tech startup run by libertarian Silicon Valley tech bros.
We're not a newspaper, we're a content portal.
We're not a taxi service, we're a ride sharing app.
We're not a pay TV service, we're a streaming platform.
We're not a department store, we're an e-commerce marketplace.
We're not a financial services firm, we're crypto.
We're not a space agency, we're a group of visionaries who are totally going to Mars next year.
We're not a copywriting and graphic design agency, we're a large language model generative AI platform.
Oh sure, we compete against those established businesses. We basically provide the same goods and services.
But we're totally not those things. At least from a legal and PR standpoint.
And that means all the laws and regulations that have built up over the decades around those industries don't apply to us.
Things like consumer protections, privacy protections, minimum wage laws, local content requirements, safety regulations, environmental protections... They totally don't apply to us.
Even copyright laws — as long as we're talking about everyone else's intellectual property.
We're going to move fast and break things — and then externalise the costs of the things we break.
We've also raised several billion in VC funding, and we'll sell our products below cost — even give them away for free for a time — until we run our competition out of the market.
Once we have a near monopoly, we'll enshitify the hell out of our service and jack up prices.
You won't believe what you agreed to in our terms of service agreement.
We may also be secretly hoarding your personal information. We know who you are, we know where you work, we know where you live. But you can trust us.
By the time the regulators and the general public catch on to what we're doing, we will have well and truly moved on to our next grift.
By the way, don't forget to check out our latest innovation. It's the Uber of toothpaste!
I am co-founding a new startup! #InputLab creates test data for thousands of formats from electronic invoices to retail orders, covering all input features – and we just got an 800k€ initial funding to start as a #CISPA spin-off in September.
I've started actively working on a tiny #SaaS whose user interface is #SFTP. Please do your best to convince me I'm making a silly mistake - I either need to be dissuaded ... or to make it happen 🤔 #Startup#SoftwareDevelopment#bootstrapping
The student cofounders of an AI studying tool that won them a $10,000 entrepreneurship prize from Emory University have been suspended, for building exactly what the school had given them money to build.
The school’s Honor Council claimed the AI tool, which helps students to generate revision flashcards and practice tests from course materials, “could be used for cheating,” and that it had been connected to a software platform used by the university without permission — even though this feature had been mentioned in the competition pitch. @404mediaco has more.
@cferdinandi A good attitude on overcoming procrastination. I sometimes will tell myself, "let it be shit and ship it anyway." Generally, good advice for a new #entrepreneur or #startup as well.
I’m more certain than ever that the first quarter of 2024 will see a grand reckoning for companies that have bet big on #AI. As I said before, I predict a lot of CFOs getting sticker shock at their compute bills, and we will see pivots and downscaling of expectations across the industry. By the middle of the year, there will likely be a general cool-down as users and investors come to grips with what “AI” can realistically do at reasonable cost (hint: not as much as the hype claims). Strategically deploying smaller models will become quite attractive, rather than monolithic solutions.
I also think 2024 is the year of the legal reckoning for the industry. Creators whose work have been used for training (i.e. plagiarized) will likely make big inroads into establishing legal frameworks for compensation, and some models will become poisoned because they were trained with unvetted data. Hopefully this also means that model-makers who have been meticulous about their training data’s providence will reap rewards.
Where are the people earning money with #OpenSource#Software ? Or is there maybe even someone who founded their own company with it or has a #StartUp ? Could you might share your story? How is this software financed (donations, support subscription, premium features, etc.), how are you doing, what are the real issues you have experienced?
Please boost to find some interesting stories and inspiration :)
So I'm hiring for a role using Rust and Solid.js. Preferably someone in Sweden, but can be anyone in the EU. The role can be fully remote, but it is preferable if we can share a whiteboard sometimes.
Neither Rust nor Solid.js knowledge is required, but familiarity with a sensible backend language and React-like APIs is a good indicator if the role is for you. :)
