How well can we understand an LLM by interpreting its representations? What can we learn by comparing brain and model representations? Our new paper (https://arxiv.org/abs/2405.05847) highlights intriguing biases in learned feature representations that make interpreting them more challenging! 1/9

Heyhey, this is a bit of a long shot but does anyone know how I could get ahold of someone of Ainu descent/is part of that culture today? Something I'm working on features imagery/references to their culture and I want to be 1000% sure my depictions are accurate and respectful.

Of course I'm using my best judgement and doing research and such, I just want to be extra sure. These people have had a history of subjugation and having to play into tropes/stereotypes for museum goers and I want to do my best to give them the respect they deserve.

It's hard to understate how important this is to a Scot, seeing accurate Scottish representation after decades of people who may never even have visited the country playing us. Even X-Men '97, wonderful though it is, continues the grand tradition of presenting a Scots dialect in ways that are nails-on-a-chalkboard for natives to hear, thank you Moira McTaggart. (Banshee's Irish lilt misses the mark too...)

It's why actors like Ewan McGregor, Karen Gillan, Kevin Kidd, James McAvoy and others are doing the lords work keeping their true accents when a part allows them to. Watching Brave I was shocked to hear the 'gobbledygook' speaking character, Young MacGuffin, chattering away in Doric, a dialect spoken in the North East of Scotland (that whole shortbread slice of land between Elgin and Aberdeen). While the entire cinema was laughing at the film's [fairly weak, pantomimish] joke I alone was in on the joke because I understood every word.

I mean, no offence to the work of the late and sorely missed James Doohan as the original Scotty, but his Scottish brogue was, to a native Scot, clearly that of a non-native speaker. As was the very English Simon Pegg's. We mock Pavel Chekov's cartoonish Russian accent way more for pretty much the same crime.

"Baw-heid". It's a wee thing (says yer Ma) but it means so much to a culture that, like many others globally, has been so historically (and still arguably currently) marginalised.

It's in my bio but in case it wasn't clear, since today is the day, I'm a trans woman. I came out in 1998.

My number one wish for today: trans representation in popular entertainment. Representation, showing minorities as real people rather than caricatures, makes it harder for the haters to spread their venom and infect others.

Last night's Asimov Debate at the American Museum of Natural History covered the latest cosmic findings from JWST. A few highlights:

Early results from JWST show a lot more bright galaxies & massive black holes than expected in the very early universe. Cosmologist Rachel Somerville admitted that her galaxy-formation models turned out to be way off. We still have a lot to learn!

It was very cool to see three women among the five cosmologists on stage at AMNH last night.

A couple kids in the audience remarked about it appreciatively afterward. Great ideas come from everyone, everywhere.

At the gym with my daughter. ESPN is on the TV on mute and they start showing Caitlin Clark.

Daughter: Oh they're showing Caitlin!
D: Yeah, she's going for the all time scoring record tonight
D: Can we watch?
Me: Sure thing.

TV switches to showing Steph Curry.

Her: Who is that?

I knew #caitlinclark was big, but never imagined there would be people that recognize her immediately that don't recognize Steph Curry.

None of us actually enjoy having to call out tech conferences for still in our year 2024 having zero speakers who aren’t white men. Getting lots of comment abuse, legal threats, guilt trips, and being known for that instead of our jobs isn’t like great or fun, actually.

scottwilson,

@hacks4pancakes That’s true, it’s not fun. But I’ll do it.

@SpecterOps, this is unacceptable and embarrassing (for you). As a white male, I promise you won’t catch me at any of your conferences or sponsored events. Do better.

'Another Ploy to Dupe Pandits': Criticism Over Bills Aiming to 'Reserve' Seats in J&K Assembly

Some community leaders say it is not a 'reservation' of seats per se, as the government is claiming, but a 'nomination' of a political nature, which they say, would not empower the community politically in any way.

Can anyone suggest books or resources for parents parenting neurotypical children?

Is this even a field of study that exists? Or just ND people as parents in general?
