So, Microsoft is silently installing Copilot onto Windows Server 2022 systems and this is a disaster.

How can you push a tool that siphons data to a third party onto a security-critical system?

What privileges does it have upon install? Who thought this is a good idea? And most importantly, who needs this?

@dmakovec @Walrus @sos Ah, no worries, it's just the same old complaint about bloat: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electron_(software_framework)#Reception#Reception)

Also, having been pretty oblivious of it for a while, I'm now seeing this farcical situation whereby Arch's package maintainers evidently have to keep six versions of electron in our [extra] repo. This is really unusual, and suggests to me a general lack of forethought in that ecosystem, you know? The fire-and-forget convenience for developers, and disrespect for everyone downstream.

cafuneandchill, to games in The Weekly 'What are you playing?' Discussion

Haven’t played anything these last several days, save a little bit of Cogmind. I don’t really enjoy traditional roguelikes, because there’s usually no real incentive to play them (i.e. story, atmosphere, engaging gameplay etc.), and, honestly, I just suck at them lol. But I do keep coming back to that one, because it’s just so immersive! And, for some reason, I get Blame! vibes from it; I guess it’s because of the whole abandoned facility full of robots thing.

Some other things I’m planning to do:

  • I’ve finished the main story of Yakuza 0 and now plan to do the remaining substories. After that, I’ll finally move on to Kiwami
  • Finished one ending of Lunacid, and will try to get to the rest (plus collect all the weapons and magic rings). While I tried my best to not use wikis or guides (so as not to spoil the secrets), I think this time I’ll probably need one. Well, FromSoft and FromSoft-inspired games really do be like that lol

A lot of people hated it on release. Especially since it came right after E.T. and people were in the "aw, aliens can be cute" mood... even though even as a kid I found E.T. creepier than the Thing or xenomorphs (I hate the damn glowy spindly finger alien creep) :P

(also "The film was nominated at the Razzie Awards for Worst Musical Score" the heck? )

How do you celebrate #Independence Day in your country? In #Finland we have so called #Linnanjuhlat. It's a #Presidential #Reception where remarkable people are invited. Every year also some ordinary citizens get an invitation. The whole event can be watched on TV. The President and his spouse shake hands with all the guests. This year one of the noteworthy dresses was worn by the former Prime Minister Sanna Marin. Her dress has #Ukrainian colors. #SlavaUkraini

Angry outrage = free advertisement = more people hear about it and might be willing to throw money at them. Especially if there is already a huge existing fanbase.

Just a random example:

  • Avatar - The Last Airbender: The version of M. Night Shyamalan, not the upcoming movie. Widely regarded as one of the worst ever adaptions of an existing franchise, hated by fans to the point that it’s become a meme to outright deny this movie ever existed. But it was spread far and wide across the internet just HOW incredibly bad the movie was. Box office: $319,713,881 worldwide.
  • 13 Assassins: Came out in the same year (2010) and is praised as a faithful but very polished and pleasing adaption of an older movie, generally favored by critics and fans alike. High ratings everywhere. But that story didn’t spark public outrage, and most people today won’t even remember that this movie exists, unlike the shitty AtLA movie. It is a well-made movie overall, faithful to the “source material”, loved by fans, but only grossed $18,689,058 world wide, roughly 17% of what the Avatar movie made in the same time frame.

Note that I am not saying that pissing off the fanbase is guaranteed to yield good results, and neither is it sustaineable in any way - but the execs aren’t interested in building something that will make them money in the long run. They’re only interested in quarterly profits and immediate results they can present to their shareholders and investors, and creating outrageous bullshit is more likely to make a bunch of people aware about what you created (albeit in a negative way). Once the public starts to lose interest again, they can just grab the next franchise and repeat the process.

„LMDE is a Linux Mint project which stands for “Linux Mint Debian Edition”. Its goal is to ensure Linux Mint would be able to continue to deliver the same user experience, and how much work would be involved, if Ubuntu was ever to disappear. LMDE is also one of our development targets, to guarantee the software we develop is compatible outside of Ubuntu.

LMDE aims to be as similar as possible to Linux Mint, but without using Ubuntu. The package base is provided by Debian instead.”
Cyt. za https://blog.linuxmint.com/?p=4570

I oraz:
„Others have objected to the closed-source nature of the Snap Store. Clément Lefèbvre (Linux Mint founder and project leader[83][84]) has written that Snap is biased and has a conflict of interest. The reasons he cited include it being governed by Canonical and locked to their store, and also that Snap works better on Ubuntu than on other distributions.[85] He later announced that the installing of Snap would be blocked by APT in Linux Mint,[86][87] although a way to disable this restriction would be documented.[88]”

Note about 2 women kissing in #StarTrek #DS9

Steve Oster recollected that a man called the show and complained, "You're ruining my kids by making them watch two women kiss like that." It was a production assistant who took the call. After hearing the man's complaint, the PA asked if the man would've been okay with his kids seeing one woman shoot the other. When the man said he would be okay with that, the PA said, "You should reconsider who's messing up your kids."
