PRAXIS FIGHTER X shows pretty well both the chances and limits of following a traditional formula as a single game developer: It is rock solid in any aspect, and even good in some – but within a genre that is so rich of great and colorful games, many of them more experimental in both gameplay and sound, a bit more boldness in design-decisions on every layer might have been better – and ironically this is underlined by the very fact that it does everything it actually does probably as good as one can possibly expect from an underground game production. If you don’t mind the formulaic gameplay the likeable story, the very well polished gameplay, and the overall high quality make it a great pick for underground gaming enthusiasts and shoot ‚em up veterans alike.
Time to bite the bullet and strip out some tokens / characters on Stickyfoot. Plenty of room to save (I think) but this is usually a good indicator that I need to stop adding features and start wrapping things up!
Getting back into my current project after some post-Ludum Dare rest.
My previous platformer had a fixed camera, so this time I want to try and have rooms that are alrger than the screen size. However, I don't want the camera to simply follow the player, as this would make it very jittery when doing wall jumps. So I implemented a dead-zone system where the camera only tracks the player if they wander far enough, coupled with some ease-in/ease-out.
I edited more of my next book. I hope to get it out before August. I also spent time playing a bit with PICO-8 again. I should spend some time doing the same with Picotron. I’m OK with Lua but would really prefer Python or Ruby.
more progress on my #pico8 game for #ldjam mostly visual improvements so we get the "demonic" aspect, now I think I should make a few levels to see if everything works
my #ldjam is taking shape, I switched the rotation to be relative and it's a lot better to make interesting levels, I made a few tutorial levels that works well I think, but it's hard to make levels that are interesting to solve but not hard #pico8#ludumdare#ld55
it's pretty satisfying to look at the solution being played once you manage to solve a complex level in my "demonic programming game"! #pico8#ldjam#ld55
So I have somehow missed an amazing DUNE II demake that @Liquidream did a couple years back. Definitely making a video for the upcoming Monday release.
At this point I can start thinking on putting together a Top-5 Pico-8 strategy games video. A previous #pico8 top-5 thing got a few K of views, which is unusual for my little YT hobby.
or maybe not, didn't realize Picotron's web export was not there yet, plus the sound on the BBS is broken... I will start with #pico8 and if I lack the resolution too much, maybe I will switch to Picotron
my #ldjam game using #pico8 is taking shape, it's a puzzle game where you give instructions to your little demon by putting strings over some glyphs (just some circle for now) I think it's a bit hard to understand right now haha
