Governmental XFA forms come from some special type of hell.

Surprisingly, some of them do work in Papers / / . It seems like a few corner cases remain where only some forms refuse to load, so I filed a ticket in with a neat reference table and sample files today. In case this is useful to anyone: https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/poppler/poppler/-/issues/1481

@nekohayo XFA Forms do indeed live in a special form of hell!

It doesn't help that the Canadian government is inexplicably using software that is 20 years old to create the sample forms you found. [eyeroll]

  • puoi;
  • hai bisogno di automatizzare dei workload e ti serve uno strumento da riga di comando completo e fatto strabene;
  • non devi caricare i tuoi documenti su servizi online malfamati;
  • non devi caricare i tuoi documenti sul cloud supersicuro di qualcun altro;
  • non devi installare programmi con licenze molto costose per due comandi banalissimi;
  • non devi installare programmi da Softonic;

Se hai sperimentato altro che valga la pena condividere, non esitare a segnalarmelo e aggiornerò l'articolo!

I was kinda hoping the contribution was added by the community or bolted in from another project.

I prefer official bodies using form like PDF than them using docx or users having to install yet another proprietary app on their phone.

#fsfe had a #pdf campaign about the latter. This hopefully helps these efforts

Do you have experience with interactive PDFs and accessibility?

Is there something one should take into account in terms of accessibility when creating them? Are there obvious pitfalls to avoid?

pkiff,
@pkiff@mastodon.social avatar

@personamatters In terms of accessibility, I would generally avoid embedding videos in PDFs, or attempting to create your own navigation menu.

Links and buttons that act as links can be tagged easily.

But buttons that manipulate a PDF form by making some parts appear or disappear are complicated to make accessible, and are best avoided unless you are using specialized software.

In my experience, most "Interactive" PDFs look dated and unprofessional, and would be better coded in HTML.

Tip of the day: Finding documents in #DEVONthinkToGo is easily done with its search field. But what about searching the document you’re currently viewing? You can easily run an in-document search in native document formats like #Markdown or rich text. Here is, how to do that. #pdf #tipoftheday #workflow https://www.devontechnologies.com/blog/20240109-in-document-search-devonthinktogo

https://canarytokens.org - generate unique honeypot resources that should never be accessed by anyone. Unless they are scanning your network or there was a breach. Get notified by email or webhook. Sample resources: URL, DNS domain, #Word/#Excel/#PDF document (notify on open), etc.

Can also be used to detect leaks. For example, each developer can have a fake, unique AWS credentials on their machine. If someone attempts to use said credentials through API, you know whose computer was compromised

The @PDFassociation has released a new "Well-Tagged PDF" (WTPDF) specification to accompany the upcoming release of PDF/UA-2 (ISO 14289-2) expected later this month. You can download the WTPDF specification for free from the PDF Association [1]

Keen PDF fans will want to check it out. But bear in mind that few applications yet generate PDFs meeting this spec, and assistive technology doesn't yet process them differently.

pkiff,

The new PDF/UA-2 (ISO 14289-2) standard for accessible PDFs is available for EUR €179 / USD $195 / CAD $265 [1].

The provisions in PDF/UA-2 are identical to those provided by "Well-Tagged PDF" (WTPDF).

So most accessibility practitioners will probably want the free WTPDF standard along with the PDF 2.0 (ISO 32000-2) standard - also free from @PDFassociation, sponsored by Adobe, Apryse and Foxit [2]

I frequently have to deal with #PDF files that contain nested PDFs (which Adobe marketed as "PDF Portfolios").

They open fine in pdf.js in Firefox, but not in macOS Preview. They are just PDFs that have one page telling the user to download and use Adobe Acrobat (no way, fuck that), and then a bunch of attachments.

They're worse in every way than just distributing a zip/tarball of PDFs. Here's a 20 line Python script (with a nix-shell shebang) to unwrap 'em.
