"Prime Minister Christopher Luxon said the move would stop disruptive behaviour and help students focus. A 2022 study found that more than one-third of 15-year-olds in the country could barely read or write."
Oh cool! Humble Bundle featuring 21 books by @scalzi! DRM-free!
Announcing the John Scalzi Humble Book Bundle, Benefiting First Book
I have several of these already, but they're scattered across 3 different ebook stores (and therefore apps) and a couple of print editions. It'll be nice to be able to bring them up on any e-reader I want.
The charity this bundle contributes to is First Book, "which provides books to and champions literacy for children all around the United States."
I would like to thank @nemacocy for reminding me about the missing children's category as I discovered more things wrong with Goodreads.
There’s only 15 categories compared to every other year which had 20.
First thing first, the awards are all done online and there’s no trophy for the winner so why did they made this selection smaller? Is it because they weren’t popular? Who cares if the paranormal fantasy category doesn’t get a lot of votes compared to normal fantasy? There’s no physical trophy to create. Let the paranormal fantasy fans be able to vote for who they think is the best book of that year.
If for some reason you have to have a max of 15 categories then it’ll be best to combine them. Instead of the best YA fantasy and fiction, make it the best YA book. Git rid of the Romantasy category, there’s already a romance section, just add fantasy romance books in that category. Fiction, science fiction, and historical fiction should be combined as well. They all fall under the fiction unbrella.
Instead of 15 categories, there’s now 11 and plenty of room to add the missing categories such as I don’t know, maybe the children's category or the graphic novel section? I know there’s going to be people reading this upset that I combine a few of these categories which is why I can’t understand for a virtual choice awards why they would restrict themselves?
Even categories that aren’t popular such as the food one have a reason to exist. I don’t know how to cook, and after discovering a cookbook that won best of the year, I might be willing to buy it.
Literacy is important, and there are several different kinds of literacy. Scrubbing some of the lesser categories is very telling. It tells me Goodreads doesn’t care about literacy but instead, engagement to its website.
"It's hard to tell (someone) that they don't know things," #OliverJames said. "But when I wasn't reading, I thought I knew everything. And then I started learning how to read and found out I knew nothing."
What is the “Do No Harm” principle? In a nutshell, it means to prioritise the #safety and well-being of yourself and others in your research endeavours. In fact, there's like a giant publisher offering works with #expired#Copyrights that thus became #PublicDomain on prices lower than the cost of self-printing...
This is a multilingual eye-test chart circa 1907. It was designed by optometrist George Mayerle. He said it was “the result of many years of theoretical study and practical experience.”
While it’s absolutely gorgeous, the chart was designed for usability, accessibility, and inclusivity.

Cape Town City libraries use technology to draw young patrons to the bookshelves: Read something, before you can use a tablet
Waiting times have increased due to the tablets’ overwhelming popularity, prompting the library staff to devise a creative solution. Those waiting their turn must read to a staff member before being allowed to use the tablets. This approach has produced remar ...continues
All these red states are now boasting about how they are withdrawing from the American Library Association. They aren’t just satisfied with banning books, they want to get rid of the places that keep and lend them, too. The Christian Right is on the march.
Carl Sagan once warned us of the “dumbing down” of America. He warned of a time when our “critical faculties in decline, unable to distinguish between what feels good and what's true, we slide, almost without noticing, back into superstition and darkness...”
That time is upon us. We must do all we can to prevent that darkness from taking hold.
They’re getting rid of the one thing that will keep any rebellious offspring dumb.
There will be rebels and we need to empower them (and kids of all ages), maybe with a book app that disappears without any foolish wand waving or silly incantations.
