Papua New Guinea says Friday’s landslide buried more than 2,000 people and formally asks for help.
AP reports: "Determining the scale of the disaster is difficult because of challenging conditions on the ground, including the village’s remote location, a lack of telecommunications and tribal warfare throughout the province which means international relief workers and aid convoys require military escorts."
More than 2,000 people could be buried alive by a massive landslide in Papua New Guinea last week, the government said on Monday, as treacherous terrain and the difficulty of getting aid to the site raises the risk few survivors will be found. #AureFreePress#News#press#headline#breaking#breakingnews#landslide
After the enormous #landslide of 1618 in #Piuro (then a city within the Three Leagues, Raetia) that wiped out the city and killed thousands, a #Zurich based printer came up with this idea: using a liftable flap. The flap offers a before and after scenario; a reading engagement with the catastrophe. The printed flap is the #mudslide.
"The Portuguese Bend landslide, in coastal southern California, is an active, slow-moving mass of blocks and debris that extends from the shoreline to moderate altitudes along part of the southerly margin of the Palos Verdes Hills... Ground failure has been widespread in this area. It evidently began in mid- to late-Pleistocene time, and it has continued intermittently to the present." #pleistocene#landslide#PortugueseBend#PalosVerdeshttps://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/0013795289900379

I have been involved in a very exciting project over the last 3 years working with archaeologists from the universities of Stavanger and Bergen examining the likely consequences of the #Storegga#Tsunami on coastal communities in Norway over 8000 years ago. We model the Storegga #landslide and generated tsunami and the inundation at high-resolution at multiple sites along the coast of Norway. New paper in #Quaternary#Science#Reviews: Walker et al. A #landslide forced me from my home—and I experienced our failure to deal with #ClimateChange at first hand
"We tried to seek help from the various authorities: local councils, the water company and insurance providers. We encountered a labyrinth of bureaucracy, disinterest—and a stark absence of support systems for landslide victims.
This response—or lack thereof—reveals a troubling incentive structure, where the fear of assuming liability results in inaction."
