Run away from anyone who offers you the false dichotomy between solitude and #collectivism. They do not recognize your right to hold them to their agreements.
"We look for loneliness inside our heads when its source lies all around us, in the destruction of collective life, the erosion of communal bonds, the ruin of civil society, the squeezing of public spaces"
Today in Labor History March 11, 1850: French anarchist Clément Duval was born. His theory of individual reclamation, which justified theft, and other crimes, as both educational and legitimate ways to redistribute the wealth, influenced the Illegalists of the 1910s, including Jules Bonnot, of the Bonnot Gang. According to Paul Albert, "The story of Clement Duval was lifted and, shorn of all politics, turned into the bestseller Papillon."
This morning*, a doctor visited me and conducted an examination. I'm showing clear signs of improvement and should be fully recovered in a few days. It's likely a viral laryngitis.
The doctor mentioned that there's a wide range of illnesses currently circulating, including some that hadn't been seen in years. This is partly because many people are caught up in the holiday rush, focused on gifts and shopping, and don't even slow down when they have a high fever. The doctor suggested watching TV commercials to see this phenomenon in action.
Following this advice, I noticed a recurring theme in the ads: people with fevers taking a pill and then immediately resuming their activities, with no regard for others. It's as if nothing's changed.
The pandemic hasn't taught us much, it seems. Individualism still underpins the decisions of many, unfortunately. I plan to avoid close contact until I'm fully recovered, and if I must interact with others, I'll wear a mask. It's not COVID, but I don't want to risk making anyone else sick due to my negligence.
*On Sunday: many years ago, during my frequent travels, I took out a private insurance policy that provided doctor visits anywhere in the world. Although I haven't used it since 2007, I kept it because it was affordable. I activated it now to avoid going to my regular doctor tomorrow.
Oh great someone posted a thing about how “ADHD and autism are only disorders in a capitalist society” again.
Speaking as a person with #ADHD I say unto you all that this take needs to die. I can’t speak for #actuallyautistic people but ADHD is difficult in a lot of ways that would still be difficult in, like, a post-scarcity space socialist paradise or whatever!
I find those with European worldviews (Europe & colonies such as CANZUS -- Canada, Australia, New Zealand, United States) are stuck on #Individualism , which ends up creating a focus on hierarchy and conformity in ways that are opposite to what strong adherents to the ideology believe it does.
That hierarchy and conformity doesn't go away if Socialism, Marxism, Communism, etc are adopted without addressing other issues as well.
On Gadigal land, outside the office of Australia's federal Environment Minister @TanyaPlibersek's office, with a large group of school students and their allies, demanding the Australian government #EndFossilFuelSubsidies and commit to #NoNewFossilFuels. #SS4C
Stop repeating their talking points & narratives (not sure which commonly-repeated tropes are part of their decades-long #ClimateDisinformation campaign? Never too late to learn)
Consider the stakes: life as we know it is incompatible with the public business plans of the most powerful corporations on the planet. One/both of those realities will definitely change. Will you?
Well, considering the Nazi’s (and NeoNazi’s) are authoritarian, then that fits with the context of the article. Though I wish they picked different artwork.
China specifically claims that stability and security are not compatible with those ideals. This article says that those ideals are a result of stability and security.
“#Individualism is, for us, creative force, immortal youth, exalting beauty, redemptive and fruitful war. It is the marvelous apotheosis of the flesh and the tragic epic of the spirit.”
~Renzo Novatore (1919)
You are advocating for actions that when implemented by the majority would in effect end #capitalism, but at the same time you are annoyed by the "end capitalism regurgitative clap trap".
In other words, you are looking for solutions that stay within the philosophical framework of #individualism to a systemic wicked problem of #ClimateChange.
🤔 Do bicycles create empathy? Or do people that care about other people, tend to care about bikes?
Why is there such a big overlap between "bike infrastructure radicalized people," and "people that care about people that are different than themselves?"
Why is there such a low overlap between "people with trash hateful takes" and "people that want more bike infrastructure?"
I did a lecture on this very issue last term - #Personhood (ideas of self, how you relate to others, how society/government conceptualise the person etc) and #Infrastructure. I do think that #CarDependency#CarCulture, driving around in your own large metal box every day, fosters entitlement and #Individualism; and that there is a correlation between driving a lot and #MAGA etc
"Social space only works with other people in it. When an entire class opts for Ubers over light rail or blood-spattered tabloid stories over the reality on the street—essentially an in-situ white flight—the social sphere can tip from rumored decay to real disaster."
We Have Put Individualism Ahead of the Common Good for Too Long (time.com)
In America today, far too many of us are disconnected from each other, lonely, self-protective, or at each other's throats.
