56% say they believe in “some higher power” aside from the #God of the #Bible; 67% say they believe that #humans have a #soul or #spirit, & majorities say they believe that #nonhuman#animals & parts of #nature can have #spiritual energies.
The Pew findings seem to debunk, or at least complicate, the idea that people who leave religion are hostile toward it.
Recalling the details of past events is a skill only humans were thought to possess. In fact, some experts have argued, with some pushback, that “episodic memory” sets humans apart from other animals. Now, rats may be the latest creatures from the animal world to disprove that theory. Here’s more from Science Alert, including how the way we “ask” animals if they remember may influence results. https://flip.it/ncsEOs #Science#Memory#Animals#Humans#Rats
The pattern of lines and whorls on each human fingerprint is unduplicated by any other finger, right? A team of researchers is casting some doubt on that long-held belief. Science Alert has more: https://flip.it/iTAS_T #Science#Humans#Fingerprints#Biology
The commuters who self-righteously shout 'can you move down please' are very same people who, on other days, just as self-righteously don't move down at all.
“Honey, is everything OK? You smell a little upset.” Live Science explains how scents are not only important in our relationship to food and the natural world. They also play a role in how we communicate with people we know. https://flip.it/B.-44T #Science#Humans#Smell#Relationships
I like working on projects that enable marginalised persons to take back their autonomy on and offline. I subscribe to #diy and am a voracious #autodidact. I make #bots for #mastodon and the #fedi. I'm building a replacement for #bandcamp and #spotify.
Archaeologists have clues about when upright primate species (not only Homo sapiens, but also Homo erectus, Homo antecessor and Neandertals) started wearing clothes. It's something I've always been curious about.
“…a deep truth about AI: that the story of AI being managed by a ‘human in the loop’ is a fantasy, because humans are neurologically incapable of maintaining vigilance in watching for rare occurrences.”
We have "a rare chance to unbundle the #internet, to pull apart an existing system and rebuild it, piece by piece, in vastly better ways…if the next phase of how we congregate and communicate online is built for #humans and not advertisers.
What we’ll get instead is something much bigger: an entirely new infrastructure for our online lives that no company or platform controls."
For most people, their hair naturally loses pigment as they age. A 2021 study showed that stress can also turn hair gray. The question is whether hair can reclaim its natural color. Science Alert has more: https://flip.it/bod-RY #Science#Health#Hair#Humans
Quote: #Gospel had allowed the IDF to run a “mass #assassination factory” in which the “emphasis is on quantity and not on quality”. A human eye, they said, “will go over the targets before each attack, but it need not spend a lot of time on them”.

That qualifies for "machines took over the world and kill #humans". 🤦♂️
Imagine a different country using that to kill humans: North Korea, Russia, ...
I urge you to re-list the West Indian manatee subpopulations, including the #Florida manatee, as endangered. One-fifth of Florida manatees died in the last two years alone. Their #population can’t sustain such heavy losses.
#Pollution in the water has created massive algal blooms which block the sun from reaching the sea floor, killing the #seagrass
One sack of garbage (including a deck of trivial pursuit cards scattered all over) in first 30 minutes of just me as some rando human wandering around with a stick in the #BlueMountaims doing a bit of #BushCleanup.
A new study in mice found limited intake of one particular essential amino acid slowed the impacts of aging and even lengthened their lifespan. Could these findings help people improve their quality of life and longevity? Science Alert reports: https://flip.it/4DYT-L #Science#Health#Longevity#Humans
@lo__@hen also #Captchas are actually #ableist and not only require #tecking in the form of #cookies to work, but #bots are even better than #humans, so just telling people to slow down will already work most of the time...
