We, the moderation and administration of tech.lgbt, are signing the Anti-Meta Fedi Pact in fellowship with our peer communities. (https://vantaa.black/pact)
There is over a decade of precedent that Facebook will not have users' best interests as their guiding principle but rather profit margins, if it joins the Fediverse.
We at tech.lgbt have long held the belief that corporation owned instances are a threat to the core of the Fediverse: freedom for users to be themselves and to be a part of their communities. The 2010s saw the loss of online freedom when the majority of the Web was consolidated into a few destinations, and Facebook entering here could lead us back to centralization. Furthermore, NDAs for server admins will constrain our sovereignty online by binding us legally from disrupting their business.
We are not products. We are people, and we do not welcome Facebook in this space.
Stories like this remind us why being mindful of protecting one's privacy online is important and that "private" messages in the majority of places aren't private at all without end-to-end encryption.
Be mindful of what sensitive data you're relinquishing to companies.
Yesterday Justin Trudeau revealed that agents of the Indian government murdered a Canadian citizen on Canadian soil. When Canadian Sikhs went to post about it on Facebook, the platform removed their posts as a violation of Indian law.
i do not understand why a news site would not have an #RSS feed of their latest headlines.
you don't have to give your content away if you don't want to. but you cannot bitch & moan about #facebook or #twitter cannibalizing your readership in their fascist gated communities when you've turned your back on web standards and the open web.
Norway wants Facebook behavioural advertising banned across Europe.
Norway has told the European Data Protection Board (EDPB) it believes a countrywide ban on Meta harvesting user data to serve up advertising on Facebook and Instagram should be made permanent and extended across Europe.
๐จ๐ฆ ๐จ๐ฆ ๐จ๐ฆ Hello Canadians looking for Canadian news (especially if youโve been dependent on Facebook or Instagram links).
CBC has created an index of Canadian news media which is searchable by location. It brings up an interesting pot-pourri of digital, tv and radio sources although you can search for just one. Thereโs a French version as well.
Iโve already discovered some new (to me) small newspapers from nearby regions ๐
Meta has to stop surveillance based advertising... in Norway.
The Norwegian Data Protection Authority imposes a ban on Meta carrying out behavioral advertising based on the surveillance and profiling of users in Norway.
This is an important first step, although temporary. What we really need is clear regulation and no way to opt in, as that is always misused.
โ ๏ธ Hey #MastoAdmin FYI there is a Mastodon security update apparently coming 6 July.
EDIT: Interestingly, the same day #Facebook#Threads launches. Hmm... ๐ค
The reason you probably didn't know about it, is because it was only announced* behind a proprietary centralized paywalled garden. (Not Twitter, but the same effect.)
Be ready.
This is not a recommended way to run an #OpenSource community.

Embrace: Look, we've launched a shiny new Twitter clone!
It's not an empty new social platform, like Google Plus was. You can already access all the content on Mastodon and all the other ActivityPub-based platforms!
We've seen the light! We now embrace open networks!
And it's so simple!
All you people who wanted to switch to Mastodon, but freaked out when you read the word "server" and thought it was too complicated for you, no fear! We've done away with the confusing choice for you! It's a super simple UX!
Extend: Our shiny new Twitter clone now integrates seamlessly with Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and more! You can even get notifications in Horizon Worlds!
Oh, we're not integrating our other platforms to ActivityPub. If you want one easy platform for Meta's social media platforms and ActivityPub, our Twitter clone is your only choice!
To advertisers and media, we'll let you boost posts too, for a tiny fee!
We'll feature you prominently on our new algorithmic feed.
So don't bother spinning up your own Masto instance, join us instead!
Extinguish: As of 1 July, we are depreciating support for ActivityPub.
Also, effective immediately, our privacy terms have been updated. You won't believe what we hid on page 76.
Threads by Instagram will launch on July 6th (thanks for the heads up @dansup!) & I noticed Meta collects a lot of data. So much data!
Threads is rumored to adopt ActivityPub later on (in October maybeโฝ We will see), but when it joins the Fediverse (if not on launch day), itโs data collection policies will make it easier to convince some (but not all) to migrate over to Misskey, Pixelfed, Mastodon & Pleroma.
Note: Uploading on Misskey as my Mastodon account @darnell is being fixed server side right now.
The EU bans Meta's use of personal data for behavioural advertising.
The European Data Protection Board said Wednesday it had adopted a binding decision that will ban Facebook and Instagram owner Meta from using the personal data of users for targeted advertisements.
Earlier this year Norway imposed a ban on sending Facebook and Instagram users targeted advertisements based on their personal data.
From a city councillor in #Toronto and a reminder why government shouldn't abdicate the town square to unaccountable private apps like #Facebook, #Twitter, or #Threads.
Governments host their own email; they can now host their own social media.
Could we get official word on what Kbin's stance is towards federating with Meta?
