@KagroX

There's an amazing footage in the documentary "Videograms of a Revolution" that shows the exact moment when instead of pointing their tanks & guns at the crowd, the military turned against Ceaușescu.

Just perusing thru my old blog. Thankfully it is in archive's wayback machine.

I have a copy of it, but it would take a bunch of wordpress migrations to get it going again.

I had it running from 2004-2008. It ended when my home was broken into and all my computers were stolen (again) and I never set it back up.

“You furnish the pictures and I’ll furnish the war”

-William Randolph Hearst

The Hearst Corporation, privately held, is so powerful they can affect the value of USA government bonds by changing their ratings.

They downgraded the USA government's credit. heh.

"Fitch Ratings" is one of their relatively miniscule holdings.

cough DeSantis

"In the spring of 2006, DeSantis arrived at Joint Task Force Guantanamo (JTF-GTMO), working directly with detainees at the Guantanamo Bay detention camp. The records of his service in the Navy were often redacted upon release to the public, to protect personal privacy, according to the Navy. Mansur Ahmad Saad al-Dayfi, who was held at Guantanamo, alleged in 2022 that DeSantis oversaw force-feeding detainees."

Back in 2005 (?) or so I set up a system called "BLASTERISK Against Torture" that routed phone messages from the group Witness Against Torture to their blog and the public. Witness Against Torture was on the ground in Cuba, literally at the fence of the Guantanamo base... They had a German satellite phone that connected to my Asterisk phone system.

I singled out DeSantis because he's in the news everyday, this is never mentioned, and he was literally in the room.

Did you see the video where Sascha Baron Cohen got Cheney to proudly sign a water torture device??!?

Perhaps there should be a blocklist just of "commercial shit". If it's a bunch of corp crap, a commercial instance, just block.

"Fitch Ratings - London - 01 Aug 2023: Fitch Ratings has downgraded the United States of America's Long-Term Foreign-Currency Issuer Default Rating (IDR) to 'AA+' from 'AAA'."

https://www.fitchratings.com/research/sovereigns/fitch-downgrades-united-states-long-term-ratings-to-aa-from-aaa-outlook-stable-01-08-2023

jebba,

"Ratings Downgrade: The rating downgrade of the United States reflects the expected fiscal deterioration over the next three years, a high and growing general government debt burden, and the erosion of governance relative to 'AA' and 'AAA' rated peers over the last two decades that has manifested in repeated debt limit standoffs and last-minute resolutions."

jebba,

"Erosion of Governance: In Fitch's view, there has been a steady deterioration in standards of governance over the last 20 years, including on fiscal and debt matters, notwithstanding the June bipartisan agreement to suspend the debt limit until January 2025. The repeated debt-limit political standoffs and last-minute resolutions have eroded confidence in fiscal management. In addition, the government lacks a medium-term fiscal framework, unlike most peers, and has a complex budgeting process."

"Economy to Slip into Recession:

Tighter credit conditions, weakening business investment, and a slowdown in consumption will push the U.S. economy into a mild recession in 4Q23 and 1Q24, according to Fitch projections. The agency sees U.S. annual real GDP growth slowing to 1.2% this year from 2.1% in 2022 and overall growth of just 0.5% in 2024."

"The paradox of automation says that the more efficient the automated system, the more crucial the human contribution of the operators. Humans are less involved, but their involvement becomes more critical.

"If an automated system has an error, it will multiply that error until it is fixed or shut down. This is where human operators come in. A fatal example of this was Air France Flight 447, where a failure of automation put the pilots into a manual situation they were not prepared for."

Today, over 70 years after doctors took Henrietta Lacks’ cells without her consent or knowledge, her family reached a settlement with biotech company.

Here’s why the cells of a Black woman have been crucial to medical research https://theconversation.com/what-are-hela-cells-a-cancer-biologist-explains-169913

Anyone know anything about the news site "Fagen wasanni"? They seem to constantly publish warmed over if not directly plagiarized things from other sites, but the Google News index likes them...

jebba,

@emilymbender

Looks dodgy.

They don't list anything about who funds them.

Nothing is listed about the editors except their names. I couldn't connect those names to any other legit publication--too many hits.

"Candice Clark" and "Chelsea Johnson" work for them on the editorial board for a supposedly Polish company.

The address for the company is a data center in Poland, used by Equinix (and maybe others).

Just seems to be AI scrape and puke.

THREAD: This thread discusses the December 2020 forced expulsion of people inhabiting farming communities in a disputed border area claimed by both Ethiopia 🇪🇹 and Sudan🇸🇩. data appears to suggest that Sudanese troops may have carried out atrocities when it removed hundreds if not thousands of Ethiopians from the Al Fashaga triangle. Nobody has properly documented the expulsions and there's not enough evidence to draw conclusions.

jebba,

@zekuzelalem

This report is by the Ethiopian government about attacks in that area that occurred in November, 2020, one month before the events you describe.

It seems to blame Tigrayans, but the government was at war with them at that moment, so maybe that isn't a surprise. It does confirm there were many attacks.

This talks about an attack in the al-Fashaga area, late December, 2020.

"He stated that property worth more than US$25.5 million was plundered and destroyed, and that 400 to 500 households were displaced, while 1,750 people from Selam Ber Kebele were displaced and their villages were burned to the ground."
