The #WHO's recent update on #LongCovid suggests around 6% of those infected go on to suffer from forms of long covid; in #Europe they currently estimate that in the first two years of the pandemic around 17mn people were effected by an extended period of illness associated with their original #covid infection.
For scientists & #doctors the problem is its wide range of symptoms: the complexity of long covid suggests that will be no 'silver bullet' cure.
#Doctors and #Therapists, who work with #Disabled people. Let me put it to you straight. You don't know shit about the disabled experience. No matter how many degrees you have. No matter how many classes you've taken or how many books you've read, acting like you do automatically makes you the asshole. Until you're #Blind, or in a #Wheelchair, or #Deaf, or in #CronicPain or even have mental disabilities like crippling #Anxiety or #ADHD or anything that can be mentioned, you can't say you know what you're doing and how to help when you don't so actually take the time to listen to the people you are sworn to take care of under oath and show some human empathy and because you're doctors you're held to the highest standard. There is no excuse as a doctor not to believe your people and not to do everything within your power, even if you have to bend the rules slightly to make sure your patients get taken care of to the highest degree and anything below that and you've failed.
UnitedHealth's Optum has rather quietly assembled ~90,000 physicians into its provider empire
But its acquisition of a 100-provider clinic in Oregon is drawing outsized scrutiny due to Oregon's oversight and transparency laws, which may be the new norm
The family of doctor Muhammad Abu Salmiya said that he is being severely tortured because he refused to appear in a video accusing the resistance of using Al Shifa Hospital as a military site.
Another doctor, who was kidnapped with Abu Salmiya, stated that the latter was forced to walk on all fours and eat from a bowl on the floor like an animal and even they put a leash on him. He added that Israeli soldiers broke both his arms.
As the 'junior' #Doctors prepare for another five day walk-out... I'm just going to say this again:
The Doctors have been forced into this position by a succession of #health secretaries who either on their own or being instructed by No.10 are playing hard-ball.
We've seen how #RishiSunak negotiates on the #EU#Horizon research programme... he's prepared to wreck the institution around which negotiations are taking place.
So more #Tory wrecking of the #NHS, not, NOT, 'militant doctors'!
Palestinian journalist Mohammed Akram Al Helo reports that the doctor, Dr Nusseib, sustained a gunshot wound to his chest and is currently in critical condition.
The shooting, which Al Helo says was a deliberate targeting, occurred while the doctor was at work in the operating room at the Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis.
#Palestine / This is what ethnocide looks like: Israel deliberate destruction of Palestinian academia.
On January 17th, the last remaining intact university in Gaza, Al-Aqsa University, was bombed and completely destroyed by the Israeli military. The bombing of #Gaza's universities is not collateral damage, but part of Israel's deliberate policy to destroy Palestinian academic and cultural life.
Israeli academic institutions have not spoken out against this destruction and its consequences.
Over the past 40 years, Palestinian universities have faced systematic harassment by #Israel, including campus closures and restrictions on faculty, students and academic cooperation.
Since October 7, the situation has severely intensified. In the occupied West Bank, most studies are online due to restrictions. In Gaza, all academic institutions have been destroyed, along with schools, libraries, archives and other educational sites.
Hundreds of students and faculty members have been killed in the bombings. At least 94 university staff members in Gaza are reported dead. Prominent academics have been specifically targeted and killed.
This represents an almost complete destruction of Palestinian academic life that will take years to rebuild. Surviving students and staff are traumatized, grieving and displaced.
Palestinian intellectual life is critical for society. Israel's systematic targeting of #academia is aimed at erasing not just physical infrastructure but Palestinian cultural and spiritual life.
Dr. Anat Matar (ענת מטר): "As Israeli academics, we must raise our voices against the killing of students and colleagues, mass arrests, and the annihilation of education in Gaza."
@oatmeal@academicchatter@palestine@israel The outrage from academics in the West is staggering in its silence. The same silence that has been heard from Western medical associations and press unions. Silence can be very loud in its complicity, and in times of genocides and massacres, silence is utterly depraved and shameful.
Meanwhile in #Lancashire, if we thought we were having trouble getting a #doctors appointment right now, given over half of the county's GP practices are worried they may have to close (due to budgetary problems) in the next two years.... things may be about to get a lot worse.
in 2023 #patient satisfaction with the #NHS dropped by 17% leaving levels the lowest since data collection started in 1997.
In an over-stretched system, where the internal market has reduced procedures & patients to economic data (outputs/efficiency etc.) is it any wonder that people do not feel satisfied?
Improving empathy may be the answer, but the lack of empathy is not only a personal issue for #doctors & #nurses, it has been engineering into the NHS by 'reforms'
It's hilarious how doctor can be 30minutes late to an hour-long appointment that was booked 2 months prior and only have 25 minutes for the appointment so ONCE MORE I can't get everything I need dealth with - DEALT WITH - and STILL NEED TO PAY FULL PRICE FOR THE APPOINTMENT ANYWAY.
How does this shit make sense?
I have not had actual full appointment in years now, and somehow "we don't have healthcare crisis, everything is normal"
“If you think a dementia screening test is very difficult, you may have early dementia,” Reiner, who is director of cardiac catheterization laboratories at GWU." He's right. I'm glad #JonathanReiner is speaking up and wish more #doctors would, esp. #neurologists who, though they might wish to avoid a diagnosis, can explain re: Trump's language difficulties. Like the historians of #fascism sounding the alarm re: #Trump, I think doctors have a similar role/obligation.
Because today is the 1st #WorldLewyBodyDementia day, I'm sharing a page from the informative & whimsical glossary from my memoir written w/#neurologist, #Dr.BruceMiller. Our goal is to give readers, #caregivers, persons with #dementia, a greater understanding of the diseases of dementia. Providing definitions of terms used by #doctors was especially important to me (not an MD) to include in the book b/c when my dad got sick, we didn't know any of this & it would have helped.
It's quite common to find out your baby's sex from your doctor in the rest of the world but not in South Korea. "The prohibition intended to resolve sex imbalance in the country by preventing abortions of female fetuses."
UK Defense Ministry: War in Ukraine likely contributing to doctor shortages in Russia (kyivindependent.com)
Russia's full-scale war against Ukraine is likely contributing to a shortage of doctors in Russia, the U.K. Defense Ministry reported on Feb. 11.
