If I plan to do both various kinds of development (Swift, Node and maybe C++, Rust and/or Kotlin), what is the best way to set up a Mac for development?
XCode alone is my biggest confusion here. Not only are there many ways to install XCode itself, but many non-Swift developer tools seem to be dependent on either XCode itself or XCode Command Line tools.
For example, certain Node-projects that call into native code needs some kind of access to LLVM (as does Rust), and that is connected to XCode somehow.
I’ve got a fresh Mac (Mini M2 Pro) and I want to set it up in a clean way from the get go!
One of the disadvantages of being a solo entrepreneur in software: after 6 hours of emails and unplanned customer support, I can finally start to code.
I mentioned the other day about finding #Perl developers. We're still looking. If you fancy working for one of the oldest Tech news sites in the world why not take a look?
(Maybe if we get enough people we might get some kind of ActivityPub integration in place. It's not high on the ToDo list just yet).
@UkiahSmith@scimon Almost everything I’ve ever done has started with learning on the job.* A #developer’s greatest skill is the ability to rapidly adapt and learn new skills. I wish bullet-point #recruiters understood that.
I taught myself #BASIC in the 1980s, later had high school classes in BASIC and #Pascal, Pascal and #HyperCard in college in the 90s, and #Csharp when I went back to finish my degree about ten years ago.
I just wrote a simple web server in pure V that has very tight memory usage, is extremely stable, and holds up really well to a large number of connections.
I'm building on top of it to make a convenient standalone web server and then use that to make a web framework.
Time for an #Introduction because I've been putting it off for so long.
I'm an ex #Developer who got burned out and decided to pivot to something else. I've set my sights on #InfoSec and its been an amazing journey so far! #CyberSecurity and #Privacy have always interested me and I don't know why it took me so long to focus on it 🤷
Aside from infosec I'm also into #Reading (Bookwyrm reveal coming soon?) And #Film
Think thats all for now, fuck fascists and have a good day friends 💜
A useful new page on Microsoft Learn, Microsoft Cloud for Developers, to learn how to integrate services across the Microsoft Cloud with tutorials, videos, code samples, documentation and more.
The tutorial demands (gently suggests) an #introduction and who am I to not give it one, even though I finished everything and came back to post later.
I am Terrorskull, clearly, and I am new to #calckey. I have been on #Mastodon for about a year but decided I should check out what else the #Fediverse has to offer. For now, at least, this will be my backup account to @terrorskull, but I still plan to post here from time to time. The web interface seems significantly better, dare I say... modern!
This concludes my introduction. Thank you for reading. Feel free to follow me here and/or on my @terrorskull account for random musings and sharing/boosts of various science and gaming related information.
Before I forget, the required cat photo is included, as a cat photo is always required for an introduction.
@evan had the idea of a “#fediverse#developer network” earlier today. Pondering this, I think this is a really excellent idea. It brings under one umbrella a whole bunch of other ideas how to move the fediverse forward, and simplifies those a lot. I think we should investigate this …
What about we do a #fediforum session tomorrow on this? Maybe @davidslifka would join us, who recently talked to some potential funders for things like that I think.
@ajsadauskas Across the internet, there's a host of niche communities on message boards and web forums, using platforms such as phpBB and its various competitors.
Is there scope to get these communities on the Fediverse?
Over the past couple of weeks, I've been trying out Lemmy (lemmy.ml ), which is basically a Reddit-like platform on the Fediverse. (For those reading this on Mastodon, this post is actually a reply to a post on Lemmy, meaning you can read it on Lemmy, on Mastodon, or elsewhere!)
It's shown me that the concept of a Fediverse -connected discussion forum certainly can work.
So is there scope to either add ActivityPub to any existing message board software platforms?
Alternatively, is there scope to develop a fediverse-connected general purpose message board platform?
After using #NeXTSTEP/#macOS from 1994-2012, I reached the same conclusion as Ken Thompson: "I've become more and more depressed, and what #Apple is doing to something that should allow you to work is just atrocious... And I have come, within the last month or two, to say, even though I've invested, you know, a zillion years in Apple — I'm throwing it away. And I'm going to Linux. To #Raspbian in particular." https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kaandEt_pKw&t=3473s
It arrived! “Engineering Management for the Rest of Us” by @sarah_edo.
Looking forward to reading this one. Several friends have recommended it lately.
Not even a cybersecurity incident at the bookstore could stop me from picking this one up. (I’m not kidding. Indigo books systems are all down. They’re only accepting cash. Can’t look anything up in their computers.)
Hey everyone! 😊 I finally took the plunge and moved to an instance that’s a little more geared to what I’m interested in, so here is my #introduction / #reintroduction.
I’m Amadeus a #designer and #developer from Germany. I dabble in art and game design from time to time and I also used to be quite the avid creative #writer although that aspect of my life has taken a bit of a backseat lately. 😅
Recent projects include a decentralised #CMS and various smaller #apps.
Hi, Francisco from #Argentina here, this is my #introduction. I'm an independent software #developer, compulsive #learner and things #maker. Looking forward to bounce ideas off with people that share interests. Currently into:
I think I should do a new #introduction as well so here it is.
Cantonese nationalist. Asexual. Formerly a front end #developer . Mainly interested in human interface/edutech/programming language theory/retrocomputing & alike. On the non-tech side I'm an avid #music addict and a big sucker for internet #art (and modern & avant-garde art in general), very interested in combining the three but do not have the time. Also I care about food a lot.
Lemmy shows how Fediverse-connected message boards can work. So is it time for a Fediverse-connected general purpose message board platform (like phpBB)? Is anyone working on this?
I'll elaborate on my thoughts further in my reply below, but I'm keen to hear what everyone thinks of this concept
