I mentioned the other day about finding #Perl developers. We're still looking. If you fancy working for one of the oldest Tech news sites in the world why not take a look?

(Maybe if we get enough people we might get some kind of ActivityPub integration in place. It's not high on the ToDo list just yet).

UkiahSmith,

@scimon this looks like a lot of fun, though I haven't touched Perl in ages.

@UkiahSmith @scimon Do it!

(Though the “experience with #SQL and ORMs such as DBIx::Class” requirement might preclude your qualification, depending on what you mean by “haven’t touched #Perl in ages)

UkiahSmith,

@mjgardner @scimon I'm all for learning on the job, but I didn't think that was much accepted by employers for core requirements. 😄

@UkiahSmith @scimon Almost everything I’ve ever done has started with learning on the job.* A #developer’s greatest skill is the ability to rapidly adapt and learn new skills. I wish bullet-point #recruiters understood that.

  • I taught myself #BASIC in the 1980s, later had high school classes in BASIC and #Pascal, Pascal and #HyperCard in college in the 90s, and #Csharp when I went back to finish my degree about ten years ago.
UkiahSmith,

@mjgardner did getting the degree help? Or why did you go back to get it?

I don't have a CS degree and haven't thought about going back to get one.

Iaso agree, leaning new things has been my greatest skill. It's pushed my career forward more than anything else.

@UkiahSmith My two reasons for going back for a degree:
• I felt bad about leaving something unfinished, despite the fact that I had done pretty well in my career to that point.
• I wanted to get past job candidate filters, both when applying and when appearing in searches.

I definitely learned valuable material in my classes, but those were my primary motivations.

UkiahSmith,

@mjgardner those are pretty good reasons.
