Yesterday wrote some spaghetti SQL with numerous CTEs with a “final” CTE at the end so I could get a grip on the results. I was getting confused and things weren’t matching my expectations.

Wrote up a stupidly basic desired end state and data model that could get me there, coded it up in dbt-duckdb, and clarified all of my confusion.

You gotta know when to stop and start over

The terrible human toll in Gaza has many causes.
A chilling investigation by +972 highlights efficiency:

  1. An engineer: “When a 3-year-old girl is killed in a home in Gaza, it’s because someone in the army decided it wasn’t a big deal for her to be killed.”

  2. An AI outputs "100 targets a day". Like a factory with murder delivery:

"According to the investigation, another reason for the large number of targets, and the extensive harm to civilian life in Gaza, is the widespread use of a system called “Habsora” (“The Gospel”), which is largely built on artificial intelligence and can “generate” targets almost automatically at a rate that far exceeds what was previously possible. This AI system, as described by a former intelligence officer, essentially facilitates a “mass assassination factory.”"

  1. "The third is “power targets,” which includes high-rises and residential towers in the heart of cities, and public buildings such as universities, banks, and government offices."

🧶

estelle,

It was easier to locate the individuals in their private houses.

“We were not interested in killing operatives only when they were in a military building or engaged in a military activity. On the contrary, the IDF bombed them in homes without hesitation, as a first option. It’s much easier to bomb a family’s home. The system is built to look for them in these situations.”

Does anyone have a good source of best practices for using #ChatGPT in programming, particularly #RStats / #DataScience to give our students? (My own advice would be "don't", but they will use it anyway so harm reduction might be the best policy).

I found a profile for a database tech company that's relevant to my employer's business. I saw they had about 70 followers so curious who was using them I opened about 10 of their profiles. What I found was only 2 of the 10 had posted anything in the last month. Most had not posted anything in months if not since last year.

So are tech people really using Mastodon?

Folks who have been here for a bit — how do you curate your feeds? Any tips?

Some things that I like: #OSS, #ML, #data engineering for #climate sciences, #programminglanguages. #travel recommendations, esp from local perspectives. #cocktails simple to high effort (today I’m making a clarified margarita). #music — indie bands (see https://alxmrs.com/faqs#music), making #experimentalmusic (electronic). Inspiration for making #weirdart.

@al_merose Saw your toot because of the data hashtag 👌... so +1 for hashtags as a method of curation.

I find the data hashtag itself is a bit 'messy', but at the same time not well used, at least on the Fosstodon federated timeline.

    Personally I find the #datadon and #dataengineering hashtags more engineering-relevant 👀

'My normative lesson is, “Heed Marginalized People.” Fundamentally and foundationally. And, like, don’t include them necessarily in your training data, but include them in the questions that you ask at the outset, and who you think to ask about what you ought to do.
    […]
So to ask that question, “Who have we not thought about; whose harms, whose needs, whose voice has been, perhaps speaking, but unheeded, for a very long time? And how do we ensure that the things that they have called out as potential sites of failure, don’t go unremarked, don’t go unaddressed.'
