What's the current approach to dealing with South African mantises in New Zealand – kill them, or just let them take over?

I found one in the kitchen last night, and it's sitting on the bench awaiting judgement and sentencing.

Nepal has been lauded for its success in nearly tripling its wild tiger population in the past 12 years, but a consequence of that has been an increase in human-tiger conflicts.

One factor for this is the lack of large-sized prey for the big cats in Bardiya National Park, home to a third of Nepal’s 355 tigers.

Creating liquid biofuels from human waste shows promise as a way to meet one of alternative energy’s greatest challenges: reducing the transportation sector’s heavy carbon footprint. The good news is there is a steady supply stream where waste is treated. Humanity produces millions of tons of sewage sludge annually via wastewater treatment.

A new study looks back into history to assess human impacts on the habitat of Asian #elephants and finds sharp declines starting several centuries ago.

Habitat loss has increasingly driven Asian elephants, like these foraging at a garbage dump in Sri Lanka, into human areas.

The good news is that there is no shortage of land, renewable resources, and technology to transform the entire energy system.

The better news is that with proper planning the impacts can be minimized enormously.

The bad news is doesn’t appear to have a account🙃

Until yesterday, the oak tree on the right looked very similar to the one on the left which is growing next to it. That was until one of my neighbours got a tree surgeon to basically massacre it, cutting out huge swathes of healthy branches.

One of the main reasons my immediate environment is so rich in birds is because of these trees, oak trees being the most biodiversity-friendly species in the UK.

I understand that attacking an oak so aggressively in late spring may severely weaken or even kill it. This is on top of disrupting the resident birds, squirrels and insects at a critical time of year.

The tree is over 100 years old.

We're in a climate and ecological crisis.

Please, someone, tell me that you understand when I say that witnessing this is like a bunch in the stomach. I feel like putting my arms around this poor violated tree and giving it a hug.

Researchers pored over satellite imagery to create one of the most comprehensive data sets on the global mining footprint ever generated.

The data set maps out in fine detail the boundaries of a combined 65,585 km2 (25,323 mi2) of mining sites across the world.

Nearly 10% of the total mining areas mapped in the study fell inside protected areas like national parks, Ramsar wetlands and UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

New research has found that a “state-of-the-art” plastic recycling facility in the U.K. could be releasing up to 75 billion microplastics per cubic meter of wastewater annually.

This amount of plastic waste accounts for about 6% of the plastic that enters the facility to be recycled, according to the study authors.
