Advertisers are fleeing social media platform X over concerns about their ads showing up next to pro-Nazi content and hate speech on the site in general, with billionaire owner Elon Musk inflaming tensions with his own posts endorsing an antisemitic conspiracy theory.
I remembered this morning, that my dislike of being advertised at, buying into brands for the name alone, or brazenly wearing or displaying brands, came from my Mum.
As a kid going shopping with Mum, she would routinely accept carrier bags from shops and then turn them inside out before packing them.
I asked her why, and she said it was because the shops don't pay her to advertise on their behalf.
That seemed really reasonable to me then, and still does now.
As a science communicator, I was interested to explore #threads.
So far, it feels like everyone is shouting everything all at once with no organization or order. There are no hashtags to help discover topics, for example. I mainly see a lot of celebs & influencers I don’t follow.
I’m not sure it can become a place to exchange meaningful ideas. But that’s probably not the point.
I’m happy at #Mastodon & there really is no comparison. It will be interesting to see how it all evolves over time.
@Sheril That was my exact experience when I tried #threads. Lots of “influencers" with hundreds of thousands of followers shouting for more followers. And #brands shouting “we are here. we are here. we are here”. It may get better over time when missing features are added (chronological timeline, follow-only view, hashtags, etc). Time will tell.
Honestly, Threads is exactly the thing that almost all people want out of a social app: A place to #Engage#with#Brands and post replies to quasi-celebrities. Not for me, but I’m happy for them.
I’m looking forward to when they federate so I can follow a few people I actually know and the handful of shitposters that I still miss from Twitter.
No matter how you feel about Threads federating, I think we can all agree that it’s absolutely hilarious how mad Elon Musk must be right now.
