Even though I’m pretty savvy to scams, the Linkt tolls text message scams still give me pause, even though I know they’re wrong. Can’t imagine how others who’re less cautious deal with it. #Australia

@timrichards There was some time from January to now where it got really dry, I’d not seen it that long without significant rain for sometime. But certainly it’s been shorter than the past.

If Tesla went out of business, would my Model Y stop working??

liquidparanoia,
@liquidparanoia@aus.social avatar

@davew @mpesce I guess the question is if you drive your Tesla to somewhere where you have no cellular coverage so the car can’t talk to Tesla’s servers, does it continue to function?

If yes, then it’s just the further future you’d need to worry about. Even then there’d be lots of people hacking the software to make them function without concerns.

It seems the #DoctorWho Wiki has forked from Fandom. Going independent. It’s all Creative Commons, so they can do that. Due to Fandom’s increasing commercialisation, invasive adverts and manipulation behind the scenes. It’s now https://tardis.wiki

Running out of iCloud storage. I don't want to pay for 2TB, so deleting stuff from my photo library. The originals I imported in, so it's not as though I'm losing anything. But am still exporting them before deletion, just in case.

liquidparanoia,
@liquidparanoia@aus.social avatar

@timrichards I have/had a lot of photos I imported for a project I was working on that I've finished and was just keeping there for (I dunno). So I've been able to delete a couple of GBs worth of photos. These were taken with non-iPhone related stuff, so it's stuff I deliberately imported.

Went to the tip shop. They also sell plants I discovered. Bought some lemon trees. $8 cheaper than Bunnings. Also got a yuzu that was about $15 cheaper than one I saw in a nursery. #GardeningAustralia

In which I dig out my iPhone 3GS to talk about why, if you know someone still using an old 3G-only phone in Australia, the time to update is NOW.

liquidparanoia,
@liquidparanoia@aus.social avatar

@alexkidman It’s a little bit concerning that when Telstra turns off the 3G that coverage looks like it will suffer if you’re far outside of the more denser populated areas. With 4G having less reach than 3G. Here’s the coverage near Bourke in NSW.

Screenshot of Telstra 4G coverage near Bourke, New South Wales.

    @jynersolives If they were wanting a series to get into it, then I’d suggest Series 5, starting with The Eleventh Hour. The 11th Doctor era captures the spirit of Doctor Who really well. And The Eleventh Hour is a pretty good jumping on point without too much baggage.

    I have just realized that I have a terrible habit in my short short stories.
    I seem to write half a conversation. As in only one side, and then leave the reader to work out what the other person said.

    Fun, but a little lazy.

    liquidparanoia,
    @liquidparanoia@aus.social avatar

    @rdm I found I used to do something similar the overuse of the ellipsis, so just leaving characters to trail off... because I thought 'you guys reading can work it out'.

    Reminder fans, not everyone is going to be able to watch the new episodes right away. Can we please use the Content Wrapper (/Warning/Spoiler) function when talking about the new episodes?

    Let's be kind and make it safe for people to stay connected to the community while avoiding spoilers.

    @Old_IT_geek @timelordiroh We’re in the same boat as everyone overseas. On the whole I’m more philosophical, yes we in Australia are losing out it not being on the ABC. But fandom wide a lot of other countries had worse experiences accessing DW, so it going to Disney should be a better experience overall for the fandom.

    liquidparanoia,
    @liquidparanoia@aus.social avatar

    @timelordiroh @Old_IT_geek I read it was either the US or Canada where it was packed full of adverts. New Zealand the same. Australia was the odd one out that didn’t have ads and was free.

    Okay, what movie/TV show/ book has the best take on time travel and why?

    liquidparanoia,
    @liquidparanoia@aus.social avatar

    @Nickiquote @RickiTarr Day of the Daleks and Time Heist are two that do time travel pretty well. The former adds in the “Blinovitch Limitation Effect” to explain why you can’t keep travelling back and having another go. And Time Heist exploits the heist trope with added time travel.

    I’m still using twitter, and also started to use Bluesky. But kinda want to use this as well.

    I think they’re all good in their own way (yes, including Twitter), but am unsure how to improve my usage here. #mastodon #bluesky #interaction

    liquidparanoia,
    @liquidparanoia@aus.social avatar

    @rolle Mostly just interactions with those I follow / follow me, it’s not really about wide reach. Of the 400 who follow its generally less than 100 whom I actually interact with.

    liquidparanoia,
    @liquidparanoia@aus.social avatar

    @rolle Ah, that's a lot. I think Bluesky is slowly becoming an option for a lot of my mutuals on Twitter, but Bluesky the tone is a little wild at the moment.

    Whatever happened to Bluetooth beacons. Weren’t they meant to be a big thing in indoor navigation or something? #technology #navigation

    liquidparanoia,
    @liquidparanoia@aus.social avatar

    @SomeGadgetGuy Yeah, now with the benefit of seeing stuff like AirTags I can see how it would've been exploited to get even more data on users.

    But I remember reading about them, how there'd be several in a building to navigate 'like indoor GPS', that you could programme to do lots of different things like push different stuff like sounds, data etc. Imagine doing that in an art gallery or other experience space.

    liquidparanoia,
    @liquidparanoia@aus.social avatar

    @SomeGadgetGuy Now I guess QR codes plus apps have sort of supplanted it.

    On a similar note I recall programmable NFC tags were also touted in a similar way. But I think this didn't go anywhere because Apple didn't play ball with NFC at the time.
