A lot of people say "all software is open source if you know assembly" this is obviously a joke but lets over analyze it
It is explicitly not Open Source (as in licensed in such a way) as the developers have not assigned it such a license, however if you stretch the definition of "source" to mean any code that runs the application rather than the actual source form of the code you could argue that all code by definition is source available.
@BrodieOnLinux people clearly have no concept over the legal theory behind "licensing" and "ownership", so no wonder they don't know the difference well.
I.e., in the #WinAmp news, it is absolutely no issue whatsoever, that the company keeps the ownership of a project, as if they wrote it, it's their IP (and if they made other contributors sign their ownership to the corpo). The issue is, how do you LICENSE the software, of which they say nothing.
'Winamp has announced that on 24 September 2024, the application's source code will be open to developers worldwide.
Winamp will open up its code for the player used on Windows, enabling the entire community to participate in its development. This is an invitation to global collaboration, where developers worldwide can contribute their expertise, ideas, and passion to help this iconic software evolve.'
Big news! Winamp's source code will be available on September 24!
This release invites developers worldwide to contribute to its evolution to help create the perfect player for Windows users
I hope also #Linux#Developer get into the project.
Winamp is going to publish their source code and go open source!
Who's going to take that nostalgic trip with me and start digging through skins and visualizers?
The current owners of Winamp have announced they will release the source code for its Windows music player on September 24, 2024, "enabling the entire community to participate in its development." https://buff.ly/4bmHZnV#Winamp#OpenSource
I just wanna say that #TheSizzle's #Zine is the best thing I have received in the mail all year. I love the care with which it was assembled from delightfully thoughtful stories, and also how it has a #Winamp playlist on the inside cover that I totally did not recreate in Apple Music.
Thanks @decryption, I know it must have been an absolute pain in the ass to make, but this is such a good artefact to put out into the world ❤️ Gives me all the warm fuzzies :D
That's now happened with build 1.99.12.18980 available with a cumulative changelog of over 1701 entries compared to 2021's build 1.0.21.7236.
There's been many more changes in the interim-builds to the first full preview build to run without the need to re-use the #winamp 5.666 core exe (note: it still needs to re-use a few of the plug-ins & supporting dlls https://getwacup.com/files.html#winamp )
