Put the entire household on the pihole, hope I don't get too many complaints, LOL (maybe overkill for the entire household, but... worth the experiment) #pihole #cybersecurity

jeremyllawson,

@ai6yr I've had a #pihole on the entire house for four years now and it's rare that I get a complaint. Have four separate VLANs and several Pihole groups to keep things nice and segregated. Small kids and guests get a highly filtered experience.

I'm also running a #Ubiquiti #Unifi Dream Machine Pro so I've got traffic rules in place and flat out block some applications and several countries entirely.

Upgraded the homelab’s 10gb switch to the UniFi EnterpriseXG. Not only do I have more 10gb ports now, I also have far fewer SFP+ modules in use, and the switches are all matchy matchy.

Also, I swear the whole rig has less latency now. I can’t prove it, but it sure feels snappier.

Started playing around with and cheap sensors and smart powerplugs (and some , also got some sensors I haven't unpacked yet).

It's been a steep learning curve but it's cool that most of the stuff just works (TP-Link and , Zigbee, (using the Hue Bridge, not directly connected to my Zigbee coordinator). Some stuff this uses the cloud (but can be used locally), other stuff takes out the cloud entirely. (1/2)

Temperature per room
Power usage from Zigbee and ESPhome/WiFi smart plugs.
PIR and door sensor tests (Zigbee)

It connects with a wide range of stuff pretty much out of the box #HomeAssistant

like #synology, #unifi #ubiquiti, and all the usual smart home suspects. Ordered some #ESP devboards to try to build a BLE proxy/repeater for a BLE sensor (https://www.simplysmart.house/blog/bluetooth-proxy-home-assistant-epshome). #Zigbee “kinda works" but range seems to be a problem (even with repeaters) and buttons (the button press doesn't always register) or sensors can be unreliable (no update for a long time)

#Ubiquiti never ceases to amaze me with how simple yet powerful it can be. I needed to route specific traffic from a specific device on the local network over a VPN. In #Unifi Dream Machine Pro, the VPN and routing setup was done in 5 minutes and very intuitively. 👌

Just deployed two new #Ubiquiti #unifi #U7-Pro access points to my home network to replace a #UAP-AC-LR and a #UAP-FlexHD. So far they seem to be working well.

I'm doing wireless mesh between the AP connected to the router and the AP in the back of the house. The connection isn't amazing (only getting 70mbps down from the meshed AP) but that's better than before.

These new AP are quite a bit bigger and heavier than my old ones.

I'm thinking about switching from a to something with on it. My home Internet can do 1gbps/45mbps although this fall I'll probably end up with symmetric 1.2gbps. I'm upgrading my access points to WiFi 7 (the new Ubiquiti APs) so the WiFi will support the throughput even if our devices don't yet.

The frustrating thing with the EdgeRouter is that it's basically been abandoned the last few years by its manufacturer. They are still selling plenty of them but... 1/n

Any prosumer grade network equipment that is worth metioning? Still saving some mony to upgrade our current network at home where a mix of TP-Link and ISP hardware (from #Proximus) is used. It must support vlan-tagging.

I know that #Ubiquiti exist and I have it at my parent's place, but I'm curious if there are any good alternatives out there

#GoodMorning. I've been in a GPU and PC building rabbit hole.

Now I'm digging another one, this time around home network wired routers...

I'm kinda tired of managing low end #OpenWRT low storage router...😅

Nothing against OpenWRT, it's been very stable and useful and I could go with it again, but I'm also open for a change...

It’s boiling down to vs . has more appeal, the app looks nice but I don’t need WiFi router (I already have 3 TP-Link Deco in a mesh) and the prices are hell. looks about right, but man… WinBox looks like shit and the learning curve is probably steep… SEND HELP!🤡

I bought a #Ubiquiti Express the other day to extend my home wifi network, and for the life of me i do not understand how this company stays in business. The experience of trying to set up this device is infuriating. It refuses to see my wired network (which my previous AP saw just fine), and so I can't set it up at all. I've wasted a significant part of my evening fighting with what should be a 60 second process to "see that wifi? extend it via your LAN connection.”

@Castiai Yes, and that would be binding contracts and commercial support.

I'd love to see a -based alternative to products but in terms of the @EU_Commission killed that with and for and their Systems they do actually have a good track record and one has full control whether it's or elsewhere...

And I do think having an easy-to-use solution is totally valid, even if it's a proprietary solution:

#Surveillance #Cybersecurity #Privacy #Ubiquiti: "Users of Ubiquiti wifi products are reporting that they are suddenly getting security camera footage, photos, and access to other people’s devices when logging into their own accounts. A user also noted that when they tried to login to their own network, they were given access to 88 Ubiquiti devices from another user’s account.

“Security Issue: Cloud Site Manager presented me your consoles, not mine,” a post on the Ubiquiti forums posted under 24 hours ago reads. “Consoles” are internet-connected Ubiquiti products, which can be anything from WiFi routers to smart doorbells to office security card-reading systems to security cameras. That post notes that when the user logged in, “I was presented with 88 consoles from another account. I had full access to these consoles, just as I would my own. This was only stopped when I forced a browser refresh.”"
