thenewoil,

@ticklemyIP No. Unless I'm mistaken, defederating serves no real purpose. Meta is not able to collect anything from a federated instance that they wouldn't be able to collect from scraping the open web like normal, other than DMs sent to Threads users. Individuals can feel free to block the threads.net domain if they don't wish to risk participation.

thenewoil,

@ticklemyIP Furthermore, I find it ironic that we would force users off the fediverse and create Meta's "Walled Garden" for them through our actions. For many Threads users, this may be the first time they even hear about the Fediverse, let alone being their first interaction with it. This may be their first chance to see firsthand that there's a whole, thriving ecosystem out there they never knew existed, and it may intrigue some of them to learn more.

thenewoil,

@ticklemyIP Defederating and isolating only 1) makes Meta look like the victim here, "(shrugs shoulders) well we tried but all those people don't want to play nice with us" and 2) more importantly, makes Threads just another shitty social media platform that perpetuates the cycle of shitty social media platforms for users. This may be our chance to finally help people see that other options exist.

Plus it means one less platform I have to sign up for to reach "normies."
