I too experienced many points of friction when visiting and working in China. My nationality and ethnicity was often either positive (Singaporeans are so good at English and Mandarin!!) when geo-political relations were good, or absolutely tragic (you are all hanjian race traitors!!) when they were not.
I’m suspicious of all attempts to bring us into the ‘Chinese fold’.
"Filipinos have been in Alaska for 236 years... We are the state’s largest immigrant minority, but there are few records for us to learn from. It’s an uphill battle, trying to share our community’s stories the way we feel is right."

This is the first tempeh I’ve had on the west coast that tastes like tempeh to me. I feel like when most people here say they don’t like tempeh they really mean they haven’t had decent tempeh.
This brand is from Eugene, OR and available at Rainbow Grocery in SF and other retailers
Indonesians should look away from the price to avoid excessive shock to the system
Me: I don’t understand why anyone eats the frozen food at Trader Joe’s
Also me: *makes a meal from frozen foods from Japan, China, India and Korea’
Culturally relevant convenience food that hits your flavor profile is important (I don’t love the Chinese or Thai stuff at TJ’s, it just tastes weird to me)
I've been to Kens Mart a few times for bulk rice and soy sauce, I'm guessing maybe there, but the frozen aisle is a blur because there's so much variety I never focus properly unless I know precisely what I'm looking for, lol.

"For many Chinese people my age or younger, finding out what happened at Tiananmen marks a moment of political awakening, a painful rupture from the past one used to know. Tiananmen is no longer a place; it is an event encapsulating the best and the worst of China. It becomes an open wound. To hold this knowledge is to assume a responsibility. One feels constantly interrogated: What can you, the living, do to not betray the dead?"
Almost everyone I know my age back home is deeply, deeply burnt out and crunchy; and yet I still don’t believe there is space there to thrive as someone who actively chooses the opposite of the Singapore Dream
If you’re in Singapore, like din tai fung, but don’t like how crowded / expensive their restaurants get: here’s a hawker stall that does functionally the same food for $4ish. Will also be crowded, but it won’t be $40
I’m annoyed that I wasn’t into birding when I was mostly in my part of the world. Now it’s going to take so much effort and time to go do that. But my dream birding trips in SE Asia right now:
