This month's editorial looks at the possible ethics issues that could come with introducing a reliable detector to the filtering process of a submissions system. Curious what people think.
https://clarkesworldmagazine.com/clarke_05_24/

jotho,

@clarkesworld A few thoughts: You are dealing with a special kind of spam here, call it slop spam. To catch a spammer, remember they are lazy people. They don't fake meta data well, or don't even bother.

  1. Look at repetitive patterns in IP addresses or user agents of the submitting Browser.
  • don't accept submissions from outdated software, like a ten year old firefox.
  • don't accept submissions by people that don't bother to hide they are using curl or wget.
    1/3
jotho,

@clarkesworld 2. Validate the author's email address, and check if it exists and is answerable. There are online services dealing with this. Don't accept submissions using disposable email addresses. Consider rejecting submissions from freemail services or services with a bad security record. Yes, this includes yahoo for example.

jotho,

@clarkesworld 3. The author's postal address should exist. Validation is more expensive than email address validation, but surprisingly accurate in developed countries. The same goes for the phone number. Look for patterns.
4. Give captchas a try on your submissions page, if you haven't already.

Let's talk briefly about what a tire-fire #Wyze is and why you shouldn't buy from them.
I attempted to order COVID tests from them near the start of the pandemic. They sold more than they had, I never received the tests I ordered, and cancelling the order was a nightmare.
But then they started spamming me.
In 2022 I unsubscribed from their #spam.

jik,
@jik@federate.social avatar

In February 2024 I asked them to delete my #Wyze account (created only to order the COVID tests).
They just spammed me again.
When I click the unsub link, the page it takes me to claims I'm already unsubscribed.
In addition to all this you're probably aware they've had numerous security and privacy issues with their products.
You really, really shouldn't patronize this company.

: "Over the last few months, many have proposed that the AI spam taking over Facebook is a great example of the “Dead Internet Theory,” which posits that large portions of the internet are made up of bots talking to bots, filtered through the lens of recommendation and engagement algorithms. Facebook is undeniably cooked, a decaying, depressing hall of horrors full of viral AI-generated content that seemingly gets worse every day.

But I do not think Facebook is the dead internet. Instead, I think it is something worse. Facebook is the zombie internet, where a mix of bots, humans, and accounts that were once humans but aren’t anymore mix together to form a disastrous website where there is little social connection at all.

I have spent more time than anyone I know endlessly scrolling through AI spam on Facebook. I have watched the evolution of Facebook’s AI spam go from slightly uncanny modifications of real images to the completely bizarre and obviously fake. I have done this from my own Facebook account, which I have had since 2005, as well as from two burner accounts I created specifically to track how AI-generated content is recommended on the platform and to see whether Facebook would put AI-generated images into my feed organically. I now use Facebook exclusively to see what kinds of bizarre AI content is going viral, and to attempt to figure out who is making it, why they are making it, and who is interacting with it."

I'm curently receiving up to 100 spam a day lately and I've come to the conclusion that sending abuse reports via #spamcop doesn't work; nobody actions the emails (observing same IP addresses sending spam over a long period despite reporting abuse via spamcop)
But...using spamcop to analyse the #spam is useful, since it's very good at providing the sender IP and ISP. I then do a whois on the IP and often find there's a website to report the abuse to instead. I've had better results this way.

Aktuell laufen wieder Spamwellen durchs Land.

received 50 #spam so far today. so much for the new DKIM effort that's supposed to reduce spam. Today's spam count is about 500% increase on the usual amount. About half of it was PDF phishing from rogue gmail accounts. It had exactly the same title and content, yet google seem to consider it dealt with if it goes to your spam folder. they really could do a lot better
