emc2, to Facebook

I and others have talked a lot about the #Facebook / #Meta #FediVerse issue over the past few days, analyzing their strategy, and possible responses, and why pre-emptive blocking isn't an effective measure.

This leaves the question of "what should we do?" So....

ITT: actually effective measures for building the resilience of the FediVerse and #ActivityPub, informed by the experience of the #OSS movement.

(This is going to be a long one)

@the_roamer @emc2 I began arguing for and testing sentiment for defederating commercial instances with the arrival of Medium on fedi.

With Meta moving in, more are waking up to the issue but it is clear that defederating will only divide and undermine the fediverse, which of course helps Meta.

So I'm returning to the thing I've said all along:

  • fedi is the lifeboat but p2p will be the shore.

Focusing on #Meta et al wastes energy and time. So support #p2p projects such as #SafeNetwork

The #SafeNetwork #kbin magazine is off to a good start with seventeen followers in a few days. The #Reddit isn't very active so this is very encouraging.

Oh and we have two moderators!

Update 22 June

The InstallNet testnet to check the installation process is still humming along nicely, and we’ve already drawn some useful lessons from it, tested some assumptions, and made plans for improvements.

Safe Network Dev Update June 22, 2023 (safenetforum.org)

As we speak, InstallNet is still humming along nicely, and we’ve already drawn some useful lessons from it, tested some assumptions, and made plans for improvements. The current iteration is really to test the safeup process that @ChrisO has been putting together to automate the installation of safe client, safenode and...

Testnet time!

InstallNet is a bit mundane in comparison to previous runs, but nonetheless does serve an important purpose.

We would like to introduce and test the installation processes for the new network components.

Objectives:

  • Ensure the processes function correctly on multiple platforms
  • Explore the user experience for the processes
  • Establish whether documentation for the processes is clear and helpful

Yes, fedi admins have been in secret talks with Meta. Now confirmed, but don't worry, they aren't selling out we are told. 🤷‍♂️

The ease with which humans are intoxicated by power is a recurring theme, and one of our greatest weaknesses.

They think they can resist, that they can go into the dragon's lair and not be deceived or corrupted because they are the heroes of ancient legend. 🤦‍♂️

Humans are the weak point, the base vulnerability. So we must build #p2p tech like #SafeNetwork.

The first Safe Network post on #kbin is an introduction with some useful links.

I plan to post the weekly development updates there too, or you can follow the @safenetwork account on Mastodon if you prefer.

I created a Safe Network magazine on .

Follow: @SafeNetwork

I've been a moderator on for the / subreddits since 2014 but will not be going back.

For now, this is just a personal test and not a MaidSafe or community effort, but who knows... if we build it, they may come. 😃

Update 01 June

We declare NatNet a success! As far as we can tell, all home nodes behind NAT were successfully detected and shut down.

Now we are confident in detecting nodes behind a NAT, the next step would be allowing them to join via hole punching and UDP/Quic.

We’re also taking an initial gander at provider nodes that can perform tasks such as archiving.

The other area we’ve returned to is the matter of node sizing.
